Scouting report

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Tennessee Titans

Josh McCown got his second start of the season, filling in for the injured Sam Darnold. The Jets were playing catch-up so McCown threw 45 passes which produced 276 yards, a touchdown and an interception. New York's offense has struggled overall and there was hope McCown could return to his 2017 play, but that hasn't happened yet.

McCown will face the Titans who are 11th in aFPA to quarterbacks. This won't be an easy game for the Jets so McCown might end up throwing the ball a lot again this week. However, you could see by last week's numbers, that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be a big day for McCown. Keep him on the bench for Week 13.

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. New England Patriots

Josh McCown will probably get another start this week with rookie Sam Darnold still not ready to return. In his first start of the season, McCown did not have much of that 2017 magic and did not produce numbers against Buffalo completing only 50% of his passes for 135 yards and two interceptions.

After a bye week, McCown will face the Patriots who are 29th in aFPA to quarterbacks. Against New England last season, McCown threw for 354 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Even with the favorable matchup, we don't expect that type of performance. McCown rates a QB2 for Week 12 so he shouldn't be in your starting lineup.

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Buffalo Bills

The Jets will go back to the veteran Josh McCown after it was announced rookie Sam Darnold has a foot injury and will miss the Buffalo game. It might be good for Darnold to take some time off to regroup and good for the Jets to have McCown back behind center. After all, he had a great 2017 season and could give New York a spark.

McCown will face a Bills defense that is ranked No. 1 in aFPA to quarterbacks. He will probably be better than Darnold, but not good enough to get in your fantasy lineup. Keep McCown on the bench for Week 10.

NYJ QB Josh McCown - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Josh McCown is coming off a strong 2017 season and will most likely be the Jets' starter to begin the season in 2018. He completed 67 percent of his passes, threw close to 3,000 yards and 18 touchdown passes. If he plays well to start the season and the Jets win, he could stay in the starting role the whole season as they won't want to rush Sam Darnold.

Fantasy Downside

McCown is warming up's Darnold seat. As soon as he has a bad game, the rookie could be given his job, which will probably be the end for McCown in New York, barring injuries. McCown had a good year in 2017, but the Jets' overall offensive weapons aren't anything to write home about.

2018 Bottom Line

There are better options for your QB2 than McCown. If you have a big roster and can hold three quarterbacks, he might be worth picking up. But since we don't know when Darnold will be the man in New York, McCown is a boom-or-bust QB in 2018.

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Denver Broncos

Josh McCown has now put up back-to-back 300+ passing yard games and what seemed to be a stop-gap move at the beginning of the season has become good quarterback play and Jets wins. McCown completed 72% of his passes on Sunday and although he only threw one touchdown pass, he ran for two others.

McCown will now face the Broncos, who are 15th in aFPA to quarterbacks, on the road. Despite recent success, it will get tougher for him at Mile High. Keep McCown on the bench as a QB2 for Week 14.

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Josh McCown registered his second 300-yard passing game of the season and also his second three touchdown game of 2017. It's been an impressive run for a quarterback that was barely drafted in the preseason, but has become a formidable fantasy player.

McCown will face the Chiefs who are ranked 23rd in aFPA to quarterbacks and have struggled without Eric Berry in the lineup. Even with the good numbers last week and the favorable matchup, McCown still only rates a QB2 for Week 13 so keep him on the bench as the Jets are still stuggling overall (two straight losses).

NYJ QB Josh McCown - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Carolina Panthers

In his last game, Josh McCown's completion rate fell below 60% for the first time this season and he threw an interception for the first time in three games. He did throw for 262 yards which was the most since Week 6, but it only yielded him one touchdown.

McCown will face one of his old teams the Carolina Panthers who are 10th in aFPA to quarterbacks. With an unfavorable matchup and the fact that his numbers have started to take a downward trend, McCown is not a good play for Week 12. Keep him on the bench as a low-end QB2.
