Cowboys TE Rico Gathers studying film of Rob Gronkowski

Monday, July 30, 2018, 7:05pm

Dallas News - [Full Article]

Rico Gathers said he used to watch a lot of film of tight ends Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham earlier in his career but eventually started viewing highlights of New England star Rob Gronkowski.

"I feel like me and Gronkowski got the same kind of run style, play style, so I watch him a lot nowadays," Gathers said. "And Witten, just watching him. I think for a transition player it's about finding out what is comfortable for you and being able to execute your assignments as well as you can."

Related players: Blake Jarwin, Geoff Swaim

Fantasy Impact:

With Witten retired, Gathers has a chance to see the field this year ... something that hasn't happened over his first two seasons thanks mostly to a concussion. Gathers is also working on his blocking. We currently have Gathers third on the depth chart behind Jarwin and Swaim.

Scouting Report

Fantasy Upside

Jimmy Graham is the kind of athletic, pass-catching tight end who should thrive with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. He led all tight ends with 10 TD receptions last season and had 19 red zone targets. That's unlikely to change despite the change of scenery.

Fantasy Downside

At 31, Graham is starting to slow down, as his 9.1 yards per catch might suggest. He also hasn't had more than 65 catches in any of the past three seasons. So there's some fear he might be losing the ability to get open.

2018 Bottom Line

All fears aside, the move to Green Bay should do wonders for Graham. He never saw more than 100 targets in three seasons in Seattle. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see that change in Green Bay. Graham's current ADP has him going in the fifth/sixth round. Given his potential TD production, he should be no worse than the fifth or sixth tight end off the board in any draft. If Graham stays healthy this season, he should help ease the loss of Jordy Nelson.
