Louisiana vs. Georgia Southern Betting Preview & Best Bets

The two biggest sporting events in the betting world are the Super Bowl and March Madness. With a 17-game schedule and one week between contests, the casual fan has more than enough time to make an informed betting decision for every game. The same cannot be said for college basketball, where lines are usually posted just 24 hours in advance during the regular season.

Six sportsbooks in Louisiana launched on Friday morning, taking online wagers all across the Bayou State. After covering the Pelicans game to kick off sports betting in Louisiana, let's turn our attention to the college basketball hardwood.

Louisiana entered the 2021-2022 season as one of the favorites in the Sun Belt Conference. They were ranked second in the preseason poll with two first-place votes, trailing only Georgia State. The Ragin' Cajuns got off to a fantastic start in conference play, with three big wins at Appalachian State, at Coastal Carolina and at home to Arkansas State. However, an injury to 6-foot-11 forward Theo Akwuba coincided with a three-game Sun Belt losing streak. Louisiana is currently 4-4 in the conference and needs to start positioning themselves for a late-season run.

Can Louisiana get back to their winning ways against a rebuilding Georgia Southern team at the Cajundome?

Louisiana vs. Georgia Southern Best Bets

Louisiana -6.5 vs. Georgia Southern (-110, DraftKings)

Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin brought in several transfers from Power 5 conferences hoping to make a run at a Sun Belt title. However, it has taken longer than expected to get all these new players to gel.

The Ragin' Cajuns are strong on the interior with Jordan Brown (14.8 PPG, 9.0 RPG), Theo Akwuba (9.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG) and Dou Gueye (5.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG) patrolling near the basket. As a result, Louisiana ranks 32nd in offensive rebounding percentage, per KenPom.com. They have also shown great improvement in three-point accuracy within conference play, ranking first overall with 37.6% accuracy from deep.

It's been difficult for Louisiana to gain consistency as a result of several injuries. Leading-scorer Jordan Brown missed one game with an upper-body injury and forward Theo Akwuba battled a football injury for a month and then tested positive for COVID-19. They finally have a fully healthy roster, putting them in perfect position to cover at home against a struggling Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern was just 1-5 in Sun Belt play until earning a 50-45 win over struggling Louisiana Monroe on Thursday. Georgia Southern plays at a fast pace but also rank 323rd in offensive turnover percentage. They shoot just 28.1% from three-point range and 65.7% from the free-throw line. Georgia Southern is simply a poor offensive team.

Louisiana is 9-6-1 against the spread, despite dealing with a fluid roster all season. They started the season with three straight covers in conference games, the last time they had a fully healthy team. Georgia Southern found success ATS in their non-conference schedule but has failed to cover in five of their past seven contests.

This line opened at Lousiana -6 and has risen slightly to Louisiana -6.5. I'm still backing the Ragin' Cajuns as a home favorite that is undervalued in the market due to a disappointing record.

Louisiana vs. Georgia Southern Game Total Over 134.5 Points (-108, FD)

Georgia Southern is 9-6 to the over this season, as a direct result of playing at the second-fastest tempo among Sun Belt teams. Their games have gone over in four of the past five games, and seven of their past nine contests.

An up-tempo pace is fine with Louisiana, as they play at the 47th-fastest tempo in the entire nation. This total is set too low in a game with a Louisiana team that has allowed their opponent to reach 68 or more points in five of the past six contests.

I expect the Ragin' Cajuns to find proficiency from the three-point line at home and dominate the boards with second chances. Sprinkle in Georgia Southern's turnover issues, and you have the perfect opportunity to tether the over to a comfortable Louisiana win.

Risk: 1.08 units on FanDuel to win 1 unit. (Bet up to -110)
