Fantasy Upside
Seals-Jones started last season on the practice squad. He was promoted to the regular roster in late September. In his first two games, Seals-Jones played only on special teams. In his third, he played one snap on offense and failed to make a one-handed catch on that play. He was inactive for the next four games, but then became a more important part of the Cardinals offense for the rest of the season.
Seals-Jones caught two touchdown passes against Houston, the first of his career. In the last seven games of the season, he caught 12 passes for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Four of his 12 receptions gained at least 20 yards, a tally which equaled the combined production of every other Cardinals tight end for the entire season. Expecting new coordinator Mike McCoy to make heavier use of the tight end position than former head coach Bruce Arians did, seems very reasonable.
Fantasy Downside
Seals-Jones is a college wide receiver who was converted to tight end. That being the case, he still needs to improve as a blocker so defenses won't be able to scheme to stop him as a receiver knowing that's why he's on the field.
2018 Bottom Line
As a receiving tight end, it is obvious Seals-Jones creates matchup problems for defenses. Since you won't be drafting him as a front-line player, it's hard to argue against securing his services as a TE2 with some upside.
Week 17 at Seattle Seahawks
Ricky Seals-Jones and the rest of the Cardinals tight ends have done very little in recent weeks, and there’s no reason to expect that to change against the Seahawks in the last game of the season. Seattle has allowed only 4 touchdowns to opposing tight ends this year, and with Drew Stanton at quarterback, Seals-Jones should remain on waivers.
Week 16 vs. New York Giants
Ricky Seals-Jones now has three disappointing games in a row, with only 2 catches for 11 yards against Washington last week, although he was targeted 6 times. Jermaine Gresham had a touchdown in each of Drew Stanton’s starts this season, giving Seals-Jones some upside. Additionally, the Giants are terrible against the tight end, and have given up more fantasy points to the position than any other team in the league. Seals-Jones is a classic boom/bust option, with just as much potential to net you zero points as to have a big game. Desperate owners in deep leagues might consider his touchdown upside, though.
Week 15 at Washington
After scoring 3 touchdowns in two games, Ricky Seals-Jones has cooled off the last two weeks, combining for only 3 catches for 64 yards. However, he has a 20+ yard catch in four straight games and has been targeted 8 times over the last two weeks.
Seals-Jones is risky, but if you’re shooting for the moon, he has a great matchup against a Washington defense that has been terrible against the tight end position. Only the Giants and the Browns have given up more fantasy points to opposing tight ends this year. If Seals-Jones continues to get targets and stretch the seam of the defense this week, he could put up big numbers. He’s a boom/bust option in all league formats.
Week 14 vs. Tennessee Titans
Ricky Seals-Jones came back to earth a bit last week against the Rams with only 2 catches. However, his 44 receiving yards was second on the team and he was targeted 5 times, despite only seeing 23% of the offensive snaps.
The Titans have been just a little below-average against the tight end this year, allowing 4 touchdowns but 61 receptions to the position this year. Seals-Jones is a risky option in most leagues, as his snap count has been low, but with his targets over the past three weeks, he may be worth a shot in deep leagues, or for fantasy owners looking for boom/bust potential.
Week 13 vs. Los Angeles Rams
Ricky Seals-Jones has burst onto the scene with 7 catches for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns over his past two games. A rookie out of Texas A&M, Seals-Jones has the size to be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenders and Cardinals quarterback Blaine Gabbert seems to be developing a nice rapport with him.
This week, Seals-Jones has upside if he can keep getting so many red zone looks, but he’ll have his work cut out for him against a Rams defense giving up the sixth-fewest fantasy points to the tight end position this year. He’s a boom/bust option this week, but he’s worth adding in all leagues due to a friendly playoff schedule.
