IND TE Dwayne Allen - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Dwayne Allen - Week 5 vs. Baltimore

Dwayne Allen has caught a touchdown in three out of four games this season. Outside of his touchdown receptions, he hasn't done a whole lot. And this week he'll go up against the Ravens who have been the stingiest against the position. Baltimore has only allowed 12 total receptions to tight ends all season and haven't allowed a touchdown.

Allen is only valuable if he scores a touchdown.

Dwayne Allen - Week 4 vs. Tennessee Titans

Dwayne Allen took advantage of the Jaguars' inability to cover the tight end and finished with a 4-43-1 stat line. The touchdown was his second of the season.

Allen has been inconsistent so far. He has two games with touchdowns and one game without a single reception. This week he goes against a tough Titans pass defense. He isn't a strong option this week.

Dwayne Allen - Week 3 vs. Jacksonville

The good news? Dwayne Allen was on the field for 81 percent of the Colts' offensive snaps in Week 2. The bad news? He didn't see a single target. Instead, some guy named Jack Doyle caught two passes for 12 yards and a touchdown.

Allen showed promise in Week 1 when he caught four balls for 64 yards and a touchdown. But a zero target game is very upsetting.

He'll face a Jaguars defense that has been very favorable to tight ends this year. Zach Ertz finished with 77 yards and 1 TD in Week 1 while Niles Paul hauled in eight passes for 99 yards and 1 TD in Week 2. Allen is basically in a committee with Coby Fleener, but he has a chance to exploit the Jags' poor defense.

It's hard to trust a TE coming off of a no target game, and that's why he should be best viewed as a TE2 with upside.

IND TE Dwayne Allen - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Dwayne Allen - Week 2 vs. Philadelphia

Dwayne Allen caught four of his five targets in Week 1 for 64 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown. The athletic tight end returned to action after missing almost all of last season with an injury.

Allen was out-targeted (8) by fellow tight end Coby Fleener. Fleener was less productive (3-21) than Allen, but the targets are a real concern. Allen's duties mostly include blocking and it limits him in the passing game.

He has some upside appeal in a solid matchup against Philadelphia, but his usage makes him a risky play. He should be viewed as a low-end TE2.

Dwayne Allen - Week 1 vs. Denver Broncos
Dwayne Allen returns to the Colts lineup after missing almost all of last season with an injury. Allen faces a Denver defense that was favorable towards tight ends last season. Allen will have to compete with receivers Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton and Hakeem Nicks for targets. He also has fellow TE Coby Fleener to worry about. Allen is a TE2 at best this week.

IND TE Dwayne Allen - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Dwayne Allen was impressive as a rookie putting up a 45-521-3 stat line. He showed his ability as a blocker and a runner making him a dangerous weapon. He's a big target at 6-foot-3, 265 pounds making him an end zone threat.

Fantasy Downside
Allen is coming off of a hip injury that kept him out of the 2013 season after Week 1. He's also known more for his blocking ability, which makes Coby Fleener the bigger threat to catch passes in the Colts offense.

Bottom Line
Fleener was inconsistent as a receiver last season, which means Allen has a chance to really be a featured member in the Colts' passing attack. We just haven't seen it from him yet, so there's a risk factor in selecting Allen. He is a break out candidate this season, but there are a lot of proven guys at his position ahead of him. He's a low TE2.
