Scouting report

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 – Mike Tolbert vs. Minnesota

Mike Tolbert returns from temporary IR to face a Vikings team that has struggled this season against the run. However, Tolbert’s role will likely continue to be as a short yardage guy, with a chance at scoring the ball and catching a few passes out of the backfield. His injury status and his timeshare with Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams makes him far too risky to rely on outside of deep touchdown only leagues.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Mike Tolbert vs. Pittsburgh
Mike Tolbert had four carries and lost five yards last week against the Lions, but he did catch three passes for 33 yards, keeping him from scoring negative points. He gets short yardage work, making him a little extra valuable in touchdown only leagues, but right now all three running backs are healthy for a change, which hurts the fantasy value of all of them, as the Panthers will likely rotate in and out. Against the Steelers this week, expect Tolbert to get his usual 6-10 touches and put up modest numbers with a half decent shot at a touchdown. Probably not worth a spot in the lineup for most fantasy owners.

CAR RB Tolbert Mike - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Mike Tolbert vs. Detroit
Mike Tolbert got quite a few touches last week against the Bucs, finishing with seven carries and two receptions. However, he ended up with only 17 combined yards and looked less powerful and less agile than he has in the past. The veteran fullback got several of his carries late in the game when the Panthers were trying to eat up the clock, which is a circumstance that isn’t likely to be repeated against the potent Detroit offense. Tolbert has value in touchdown only leagues, but ultimately should probably remain on waivers for the time being.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Mike Tolbert vs. Tampa Bay
Mike Tolbert will catch a couple of passes and get a couple carries in most games this season, and he’ll steal a few touchdowns over the course of the year from the Panthers’ other two running backs. Beyond that, Tolbert’s value is pretty limited. He did manage to have seven total touchdowns last year and over 500 yards from scrimmage, but with Jonathan Stewart healthy and the Panthers offensive line still a work in progress, it’s hard to trust starting a fullback with only the hope that he vultures a touchdown to keep you warm on Sunday.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Mike Tolbert hasn’t been used as often in Carolina as he was in San Diego, but he’s still a capable short yardage runner who has run for 12 touchdowns over the past two seasons as a Panthers, and caught another pair of scores last year on 27 receptions. Tolbert is a battering ram and is part of a three headed Panther backfield that has been injured and underwhelming since its creation in 2012.

Fantasy Upside
Tolbert will continue to be used in short yardage situations and because he has had 27 receptions in each of the past two seasons, he’s a versatile threat who can put up decent fantasy numbers on a good day. Additionally, this will be his second season under offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who uses a more traditional pro-style offense than is common around the league, leading to more opportunities for playmaking fullbacks such as Tolbert. His biggest upside however, is if Carolina’s two injury prone backs miss significant time, not a small possibility, thrusting Tolbert into more action.

Fantasy Downside
Unfortunately, Tolbert struggles with the same problems the other runners in Carolina do. The offensive line is a work in progress right now, Cam Newton vultures touchdowns away from his running backs, and Tolbert is part of a crowded backfield of players who will all garner carries when healthy.

Bottom Line
Tolbert is a low end RB option who belongs on your bench. He gets an increase in value in TD only leagues, where he can be considered a RB3 option, but in all other league formats, he’s a desperation start in most weeks. He’s worth a late round flyer as decent depth in most leagues, with the upside to get an increase in workload should DeAngelo Williams and/or Jonathan Stewart miss any time.
