Scouting report

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. New York Giants

Mike Tolbert had six carries for 17 yards against the Falcons last week. He added 13 yards on a pair of receptions as well, but he remained a secondary option behind Jonathan Stewart for most of the game, and then secondary to Fozzy Whittaker after Stewart went out.

This week, Tolbert should see an increase in touches against a vulnerable Giants defense with Stewart set to miss the matchup. Expect a timeshare between Tolbert, Whittaker, and rookie Cameron Artis-Payne, limiting the value of any Panthers back, but Tolbert’s increased work and short yardage prowess make him an intriguing low end RB2/3 option if you’re desperate.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Atlanta
Mike Tolbert had a nice touchdown reception last week against the Saints, which was followed by a thoroughly enjoyable rendition of the Carlton dance from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. However, he finished with only four touches on the day, which doesn’t inspire much confidence for fantasy owners. In touchdown only leagues, he has upside against a Falcons run defense that has allowed the second most rushing touchdowns this year, but in most leagues, Tolbert should remain on waivers.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New Orleans
Mike Tolbert had 16 yards on four carries last week against the Cowboys. He was targeted only once in the passing game, and he remains a situational and part-time player in the Panthers offense, limiting his fantasy value. He faces a vulnerable Saints defense this week that has been one of the worst in the league this year, but with only a handful of touches per game, it’s hard to trust the veteran battering ram, and fantasy owners would be best to leave him on waivers in most leagues.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Dallas
Mike Tolbert had just five yards on seven carries last week against Washington, but he added a short touchdown reception to his totals, turning in a decent overall outing as a result. Tolbert will score touchdowns occasionally and has been used a bit in the passing game this year, but his output is too inconsistent to count on for most fantasy owners. Outside of large, touchdown-only leagues, he has very little fantasy value.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Green Bay
Mike Tolbert had a 40-yard reception last week against the Colts, but he didn’t carry the ball once. He loses a lot of work to quarterback Cam Newton in short yardage situations and Jonathan Stewart remains the bell cow of the offense. Tolbert may vulture the occasional touchdown, but that’s not enough to warrant starting him in most leagues. He should remain on waivers.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Indianapolis
Mike Tolbert ran harder than I’ve seen him run in a long time against the Eagles last week and he wound up with a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown as a result (seriously, watch his receiving touchdown if you missed it and watch him bowl over people), but he only had four touches for 18 yards on the day, limiting his fantasy value. While he may continue to get some goal line work, it’s hard to trust that in most fantasy leagues, and fantasy owners should probably leave him on the bench.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tampa Bay
Mike Tolbert has seen his snap count increase in each of the last two games, and he finished the game against the Saints last week with five carries and three receptions for a total of 44 yards. Tolbert may vulture a TD at some point this season, but expecting more than 8-12 touches a game is a lot for the veteran. Jonathan Stewart hasn’t been great this season, but he’ll remain the primary cog in the Panther backfield, and until that changes, Tolbert should probably stay on the waiver wire.
