Scouting report

by Brandon Niles

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

In an injury plagued 2014 season that saw him suit up for only eight games, Mike Tolbert had his worst season statistically since his rookie year in 2008 with the Chargers. Tolbert finished with only 78 yards, and a 2.1 yard average on the ground, and he failed to find the end zone after scoring at least five times in each of the previous four seasons. Tolbert will look to get healthy and rebound from a forgettable season.

Fantasy Upside
If healthy, Tolbert has a chance to resume his role as a viable goal line back. He scored 12 rushing touchdowns over the course of the 2012-2013 seasons in Carolina, and the Panthers tend to be more successful when pounding the rock with all their backs. He should get more looks this season, and the Panthers line might be a little better.

Fantasy Downside
The offensive line should be improved, but it’s still sketchy, and Cam Newton vultures a lot of those goal line opportunities away from the Panthers’ backfield. Additionally, Tolbert will be 30 in November, so it’s possible that the years of his bruising running style are starting to catch up to him. He’s also unlikely to challenge for a starting role in the offense or anything more than a fullback/short yardage player, limiting his fantasy potential.

Bottom Line
Tolbert is a late round pick in touchdown-only leagues, but without a clear path to big time touches, he’s too risky to warrant draft considerations. It’s possible he gets some carries if the oft-injured Jonathan Stewart goes down again, but even then he’ll be contending with younger legs for carries. Tolbert’s days of consistent fantasy production appear to be on a serious decline, as his stats have plummeted in all categories since his glory days in San Diego.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Divisional Round – Mike Tolbert vs. Seattle
Mike Tolbert had only two carries and seven yards last week against the Cardinals. While he added a one yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, there’s no reason to expect that kind of thing to happen in any given week. That was his only target on the day, and he’s only good for a couple of touches in each game. Tolbert should remain on your fantasy sidelines this week.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 18, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wildcard Weekend – Mike Tolbert vs. Arizona
Mike Tolbert had seven carries last week against the Falcons but only finished with 12 yards. He’s splitting change of pace carries with Fozzy Whitaker right now and hasn’t had the same pop on short yardage attempts as he used to. He still has some value in TD only leagues if you cross your fingers, but mostly, fantasy owners should look elsewhere.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Mike Tolbert vs. Atlanta
Mike Tolbert had seven carries last week against the Browns, but he only managed 19 yards. He has potential for a goal line touch in any given week, but generally speaking, it’s way too risky to count on him to put up any kind of consistent numbers. Fantasy owners should avoid him in all league formats.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Mike Tolbert vs. Cleveland
Mike Tolbert only had two carries for four yards last week, and he’s starting to look washed up. He’s been hurt most of the year, but in the limited roles he’s had, he hasn’t run with the same kind of intensity that we once saw from him. With such limited work, his only value is as a guy that sometimes vultures a touchdown, which doesn’t bode well for his fantasy prowess and owners should leave him on waivers.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Mike Tolbert vs. Tampa Bay
Mike Tolbert got some spot duty against the Saints last week, running the ball five times and catching two passes for a total of 62 yards from scrimmage as the Panthers destroyed their division rivals. Tolbert is a good player and a nice short yardage option for fantasy owners in touchdown only leagues, but is a long shot to put up solid numbers on a week to week basis. He should be left on waivers in most leagues, and definitely shouldn’t be counted on this late in the fantasy season.

CAR RB Mike Tolbert - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – Mike Tolbert vs. New Orleans
Mike Tolbert came back last week from injury but only touched the ball four times and finished with five yards total. Tolbert will likely get a little more work this week, even with DeAngelo Williams out, he’s still a risky option who is unlikely to produce unless he manages to score on a goal line carry. That’s too risky for me, and fantasy owners should leave him on waivers.
