Scouting report

STL RB Tre Mason - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9: Mason vs. 49ers
Tre Mason rushed just seven times for 32 yards and caught his lone target for a one-yard gain in the Rams’ Week 8 loss to the Chiefs. One week after he was the featured back in a win over Seattle, the Rams’ coaching staff questionably decided to share the wealth among their three main backs in Kansas City. Benny Cunningham started, but he split carries with both Mason and Zac Stacy. Due to the inconsistent habits of the coaching staff, none of St. Louis’ backs are trustworthy starts, although Mason still carries the highest upside in the group. View Mason as a RB3 for now and monitor his usage this week. He currently ranks as our No. 33 overall RB for Week 9.

STL RB Tre Mason - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8: Mason vs. Chiefs
Tre Mason out-touched every St. Louis back last week while rushing 18 times for 85 yards in the Rams’ Week 7 win over the Seahawks. While he nearly lost a fumble on the final play of the game, Mason flashed the same explosion that made him a star at Auburn. The problem for fantasy owners is that Jeff Fisher remains committed, at least publicly, to a RBBC approach, which could limit the rookie’s opportunities. Still, Mason is clearly the back to own in St. Louis and he should see another 15-20 touches this Sunday versus Kansas City. He ranks as our No. 28 overall RB for Week 8 so consider him a flex play for now.

STL RB Tre Mason - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7: Mason vs. Seahawks
Tre Mason rushed five times for 40 yards while adding one catch for 12 yards in his NFL debut for the Rams on Monday night. Mason had been inactive for the team's previous four games but looked explosive in his first game since the preseason. Out of the three top backs in St. Louis - Mason, Benny Cunningham and Zac Stacy - Mason has the most upside of the trio. But it's unclear at this point how the Rams plan to utilize all three backs and thus, none of them are worth starting in fantasy formats. If you want to grab Mason as a roster stash, he could be a low-end RB2 in PPR formats down the road. But again, trying to figure out how Brian Schottenheimer will use his backs on a week-to-week basis is a hopeless endeavor. Mason ranks as our No. 48 overall RB for Week 7.

STL RB Mason Tre - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Mason vs. Vikings
Tre Mason remains stuck behind Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham on the Rams' official depth chart following an up and down preseason. Until the coaching staff trusts him in pass protection, he'll be limited to COP duties in Brian Schottenheimer's offense. If you're a Stacy owner, Cunningham is the better handcuff at the moment. Mason ranks as our No. 96 RB for Week 1.

STL RB Mason Tre - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Rams chose Mason with the 75th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft despite having more pressing needs than running back. Thus, they clearly think highly of the Auburn product who broke Bo Jackson's single-season record while rushing for 1,816 yards as a junior in 2013. Mason is currently competing with Benny Cunningham for touches behind starter Zac Stacy but if either back suffers an injury, the rookie would be thrust into a major role on offense. Mason also offers big-play potential in the passing game and figures to impact the screen game throughout the year.

Fantasy Downside
While there was some chatter early in camp that Mason could compete for a starting job, it turns out that OC Brian Schottenheimer was just using coach speak to motivate the rookie. The fact remains that Stacy is the starter and Cunningham has received the first touches off the bench. Cunningham has done nothing to be unseated as a the No. 2 back in the Rams' offense and Mason has a learn curve as a pass protector after not having to block at Auburn. (He did stonewall a New Orleans defender in Week 1 of the preseason but he needs to prove that he can pass protect on a weekly basis.) All of this limits his potential in 2014.

Bottom Line
Mason is currently our 69th-ranked RB in standard formats and 67th-ranked back in PPR leagues. As of right now he projects more as a change-of-pace back than a solid handcuff for Stacy owners. In fact, Cunningham looks like the better handcuff heading into the season, even though Mason offers a higher ceiling in terms of potential and could eventually earn a bigger role. If you draft Mason as a late-round flier, just keep in mind that you may not see an immediate return on your investment unless there's an injury.
