Scouting report

NO RB Tim Hightower Week 10, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Denver
Tim Hightower finished with 87 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries while also catching his only target for 15 yards in the Saints’ Week 9 win over the 49ers. Sean Payton stated early last week that both Hightower and Mark Ingram would share the backfield workload and he was true to his statement. Ingram remains the more productive back, but Payton is instant on Hightower being involved in the offense. Ranked as our RB34, view Hightower as a RB3 for Week 10’s matchup with the Broncos.

NO RB Tim Hightower - Week 9, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at San Francisco
After Mark Ingram was benched for fumbling, Tim Hightower was inserted as the Saints' No. 1 back in Week 8 and rushed 26 times for 102 yards in the team's win. Sadly for Ingram owners, Hightower received five different goal-line touches and was stopped on all five opportunities. The following day, coach Sean Payton said that Hightower "definitely" earned more work moving forward, and there was a report by ESPN's Britt McHenry that suggested the Saints will use a backfield committee in Week 9.

Hightower ranks as our RB33 for Week 9, so we're not buying him as a potential RB2 candidate for now. Ingram ranks as our RB16, so we still view him as a RB2, albeit a risky RB2, for the Saints' game against the Niners on Sunday. Keep Hightower on your bench for now.

NO RB Tim Hightower - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Atlanta
Tim Hightower rushed for just nine yards on three carries in the Saints' Week 2 loss to the Giants. All three of Hightower's carries came in the first half. New Orleans has yet to fully commit to its running game but Mark Ingram remains the team's every-down back. Hightower and Travaris Cadet are simply handcuffs for Ingram owners and shouldn't expect either back to play significant roles in Week 3 versus Atlanta.

NO RB Tim Hightower - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at New York Giants
Tim Hightower rushed four times for nine yards in the Saints Week 1 loss to the Raiders, while also adding one catch for one additional yard. Hightower is nothing more than Mark Ingram's backup and handcuff for Ingram owners. Ranked as our RB49 for Week 2, keep Hightower on your bench for Sunday's matchup against the Giants.

NO RB Tim Hightower - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Tim Hightower rushed 96 times for 375 yards with four touchdowns in 2015. He carved out a significant role for himself in December, with his best performance coming in Week 16 versus the Jaguars when he rushed 27 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns with starter Mark Ingram out with a season-ending injury. Slated to be Ingram's primary backup in 2016, Hightower will be first in line for carries if Ingram were to suffer another injury.

Fantasy Downside
Hightower's fantasy value is tied to Ingram's health. As long as Ingram stays healthy, he'll be the lead back in New Orleans and Hightower will be relegated to a backup role. The Saints' backfield is crowded, with Ingram, Hightower, C.J. Spiller, Marcus Murphy and Travaris Cadet all listed on the team's depth chart. Signed off the street just one month before Ingram suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last season, the Saints' investment in Hightower is minimal (one year, $840,000 salary). If Hightower were to slip in any way, Sean Payton has other options for Ingram's backup.

2016 Bottom Line
Hightower's current ADP is 24.01 in 10-team formats and 20.03 in 12-team standard leagues. Ingram owners should target Hightower in the final rounds of their draft, as the latter is expected to be the backup in New Orleans. With Ingram out for the year last season, Hightower proved in the final month that he's capable of being the Saints' lead back. Ingram owners should nab Hightower late as insurance.

NO RB Tim Hightower - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Atlanta
Tim Hightower was a beast in the Saints' Week 16 win over the Jaguars, rushing 27 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns while also adding three catches for an additional 47 yards. It was Hightower's first 100-yard game in five years and he now has three touchdowns in three games since replacing the injured Mark Ingram. The Falcons' defense has been handing out rushing touchdowns like Halloween candy all season so Hightower will be a great play in both standard and DFS leagues this week. He ranks as our RB4 for Week 17.

NO RB Tim Hightower - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Jacksonville
Tim Hightower rushed for 54 yards on 13 carries while also adding three catches for 31 yards in the Saints' Week 15 loss to the Lions. Owners were robbed of a Hightower rushing touchdown in the first half after the play was called back on an illegal formation penalty. With the Lions getting out to a big lead after halftime, the Saints were forced to throw the ball to get back into the game, which limited Hightower's involvement. Even though his final numbers weren't great, Hightower is clearly the featured back with Mark Ingram out for the season. He's out-touched C.J. Spiller 45-10 the past two games and should see a heavy workload this Sunday versus the Jaguars. Hightower is our RB19 for Week 16 and can be viewed as a RB2.
