Scouting report

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Thomas Rawls was the No. 1 running back for Week 1 heading into the season opener, but didn't play as he has been nursing a bad ankle. He is expected to play Sunday and be the starter.

But how will coach Pete Carroll distribute the playing time at running back? Chris Carson actually played the most snaps followed up C.J. Prosise and then Eddie Lacy. Rawls should top all of them, but there are still a lot of running backs in Seattle.

The matchup is very good as the Niners run defense is bad. So, whoever gets the carries should be effective.

Start Rawls this week but only as a low-end RB3 or flex, but be cautious. We have to wait and get an idea of how much Seattle will use Rawls compared to the other backs.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Green Bay Packers

Reports coming out of Seattle this week say Thomas Rawls is the No. 1 back, which has not been the case in camp. Even if he has jumped ahead of Eddie Lacy, what does that mean?

We still think it means running back by committee and that means nobody can really be trusted from a fantasy standpoint. Keep Rawls on the bench and pay close attention to how Seattle uses their running backs in Week 1.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Thomas Rawls enters his third season with 16 career starts for the Seahawks. Although he is not the starter, Seattle still expects to use him to back-up starter Eddie Lacy, as the team's 1st- and 2nd-down back, while C.J. Prosise is expected to be the primary third-down back. Rawls has six career 100+ yard performances and averaged 13 carries per game the last nine games of the 2016 season for the 'Hawks.

Fantasy Downside

Although Rawls has a fairly impressive track record, it's a crowded backfield and Lacy is being given the first chance to carry the workload. So, assuming Lacy will fail or get hurt is probably not a good reason to draft Rawls. He also has to run behind an offensive line that will struggle in 2017. He averaged only 3.2 yards per carry last season.

2017 Bottom Line

Rawls' fantasy value heavily relies on Lacy getting hurt or being ineffective. Lacy does have a good track record but also has struggled with his weight and injuries. The door could open for Rawls, but it's only an 'if' at this time. He ranks 64th on the running back list and should be drafted for depth purposes only or as a handcuff to Lacy.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 19, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Divisional Round at Atlanta
Thomas Rawls exploded last week against the Lions when he ran for 161 yards and a touchdown (the rushing total was his highest of the season). The Seahawks are hoping they can ride Rawls on the road against the Falcons, after he missed the first meeting with them this season.

Atlanta is only 26th in aFPA to running backs, so that is an advantage for Rawls. He could help your team this week, but is a second-tier running back behind better options for the Divisional Playoffs.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 18, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wild Card Round vs Detroit
Thomas Rawls ended his season on a sour note with 16 carries for 22 yards over the last two games. He did score a touchdown but his touches were not there. The Seattle offense played well, but it was the passing game that drove them.

The Lions are 17th in aFPA to running backs, so there so advantage either way. We just don't think Rawls will get enough touches to make a major impact. Out of the 8 featured backs playing this week, he ranks 6th. If you have a better option, take it.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 16, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Cardinals
The good news is Thomas Rawls had 23 touches last week. The bad news is he had 39 total yards from scrimmage. Rawls seems to be healthy, but his fantasy numbers have been mixed since his return.

The Cardinals are next up for Seattle and are ranked fourth in aFPA to running backs. That tough matchup pushes Rawls back to a high-end RB3 or flex for Week 16. The touches should be there, but will the production follow? It hasn't happened enough to be sure.

SEA RB Thomas Rawls - Week 15, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs Los Angeles
Thomas Rawls had average production last week against Green Bay, but the most bothersome fact about him since his return are the touches. He is only averaging about 14 touches a game, and considering there aren't many other options, we would like to see a higher total.

Rawls will face the Rams this week, who are 13th in aFPA to running backs. We expect the struggling Seahawks offense to turn it around at home this week against LA, so start Rawls as a solid RB1 on Thursday night.
