Scouting report

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Philadelphia

Shane Vereen should’ve had a chance against the Vikings last week with the Giants badly needing explosive plays without Odell Beckham Jr. in the lineup. Instead, he finished with only one carry and a pair of receptions for 24 total yards from scrimmage. While he faces a very vulnerable Philadelphia defense to close out the season, Vereen hasn’t done enough in recent weeks to suggest he’ll put together a nice outing for fantasy owners, and come championship time, he’s just too risky to rely on.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Minnesota

Shane Vereen had a nice game last week against the Panthers. He only had four carries for 29 yards on the ground, but he added eight receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown in the passing game. Vereen has been far too inconsistent to trust though, and fantasy owners should leave him on the bench, even in PPR leagues, against the Vikings this week.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Carolina
Shane Vereen had one of his worst games of the year last week against Miami. He only carried the ball once, and only caught one pass, gaining a total of 10 yards on the day. Vereen was expected to be a nice third down back for the Giants this year, but he was only on the field for 21 percent of the team’s offensive snaps last week and hasn’t been nearly consistent enough to warrant fantasy consideration. He should be left out of fantasy lineups this week against the league’s fourth best run defense.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New York Jets
Shane Vereen had 15 yards on two carries last week, and he added 21 yards on four receptions as well. Vereen has struggled to make much of an impact in the running game and also in the passing game this year, despite his prowess as a versatile, pass-catching back. This week, things won’t get easier for him against the league’s best run defense. The Jets have only allowed two rushing touchdowns all year, and Vereen should remain on your bench with the rest of the Giants rushers for this week.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Washington

Shane Vereen has been very inconsistent this season, struggling to put up consistent fantasy numbers from week to week. Against the Patriots in Week 10 before the bye, Vereen had just 26 total yards from scrimmage, and only touched the ball six times, including a pair of receptions.

Vereen has some upside this week against a Washington defense that allows more rushing yards per attempt to opposing offenses than anyone other than the Chargers and the Saints. However, if he continues to only get six touches in games, his fantasy value will be limited. He was targeted four times in the passing game against the Patriots, which gives him some PPR value in a nice matchup, but he’s likely a low-end RB3 option at best in most leagues due to his inconsistent workload.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. New England

Shane Vereen had 10 touches last week, including four receptions, and ended up with a total of 43 yards from scrimmage. He did score a touchdown, helping his fantasy output, but he’s been inconsistent at best for fantasy owners.

This week, Vereen faces his old team. The Patriots have been good against the run this year, allowing less rushing yards on the season than anyone other than the Jets. Expect another 8-12 total touches for Vereen against his former team, with his pass catching making him a borderline RB3/flex option in most leagues. He has low-end RB2 potential in deep PPR leagues.

NYG RB Shane Vereen - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Tampa Bay

Shane Vereen had a nice game against the Saints last week. In what turned out to be a shootout between the two teams, Vereen only carried the ball twice for three yards, but he caught eight of the nine passes thrown his way for 60 yards and a touchdown. Vereen continued his Jekyll & Hyde routine in the passing game, having games with significant targets, interrupted by games with minimal looks.

This week, Vereen has as good a chance as anyone in the Giants backfield to catch another half dozen passes. The Bucs have allowed 30 receptions to opposing running backs this year. Vereen is a risky option at the RB position with enough upside to make him a viable RB3 or flex option in PPR formats. He’s just inside our top 30 this week and fantasy owners should use him with caution.
