NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Dallas Cowboys

Saquon Barkley had 21 carries for 72 yards on the ground last week against the Panthers, and added another 16 yards on three receptions. Barkley has 48 touches already through just two games, so any concerns about the team limiting his workload should be put to rest. Barkley is also averaging 6.1 yards per carry, so it’s good to see him thriving in a contract year after injuries plagued him the last few seasons.

This week, Barkley faces a Cowboys defense that held Joe Mixon to just 3.0 yards per carry last week, although Leonard Fournette finished as the RB15 in Week 1 against Dallas. Expect a busy workload for Barkley, which should lead to volume fantasy points, even if his efficiency wanes a bit against a tough front-seven. Start him.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Carolina Panthers

Saquon Barkley is back!! All of fantasy twitter took a collective sigh of relief as Barkley looked productive, healthy, and explosive in Week 1 against the Titans. Barkley had 18 carries and six receptions for a total of 194 yards and a touchdown, including a 68-yard run that helped turn the game around for the Giants.

This week, Barkley faces a Panthers defense that allowed 26 points to Jacoby Brissett’s Browns last week, including 217 yards on the ground. Barkley should be used prolifically in this matchup and should once again put up solid numbers. Start him in all formats as an RB1.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Tennessee Titans

Since bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 2018, Saquon Barkley has struggled with injuries and general offensive struggles in New York over his last three years. His yards-per-carry plummeted to just 3.7 last season, and he found the end zone only four times in 13 games. He scored 15 as a rookie. Barkley still caught 41 balls and averages 5.9 targets per game in his career, making him a high-upside option in PPR formats. The Giants made upgrades to the offensive line and the coaching staff, so here’s hoping Barkley is able to take advantage of it.

Barkley starts the season against a tough Tennessee defense that ranked third in aFPA to opposing running backs last season, making it hard to expect top-notch numbers from him right off the bat. However, his potential to impact the passing game makes him a solid, high-floor RB2 option with RB1 upside. Start him.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Saquon Barkley is super talented and a complete back. He has a career average of 15 carries and 4.3 receptions per game, making him a multi-faceted workhorse. Now two years removed from an ACL tear that wiped out all but two games in 2020, Barkley will be looking to cash in big before hitting free agency next offseason. The Giants helped him out by bringing in offensive-minded Head Coach Brian Daboll and by drafting mammoth tackle Evan Neal out of Alabama with the seventh overall pick in the draft. If everything goes right, Barkley has the potential to be the best back in football, a moniker he was well on his way to earning after his standout rookie year in 2018.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Unfortunately, a lot needs to go right for Barkley to reach his incredible promise. Daboll will need to have a quick impact on an offense that was 31st in the league in points scored last year. The offensive line will need to gel quickly in order to provide above-average blocking. Most importantly, Barkley will need to stay healthy. He was nicked up throughout last season, missing four games and playing hobbled throughout the year. While all those things are very possible, investing heavily in Barkley assumes they’ll all go right. That could be a big risk.

2022 Bottom Line
Barkley was more enticing as a third-round option early in the offseason. As the hype around him has increased, his ADP has risen into the second round, where fantasy managers are banking on him to anchor their teams. He might do it and we have him ranked as a fringe top-10 running back, but it’s definitely a risk to take him at cost.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Chicago Bears

Saquon Barkley had 15 carries and one reception for just 28 total yards last week against the Eagles. He’s been splitting passing downs with Devontae Booker and this looks like a lost season for the Giants offense.

This week, Barkley faces a Bears defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing running backs. Watch the injury report carefully, as he may get shut down. He was seen limping a little on the sidelines according to our own Adam Hutchison. If he does start, in a nice matchup, he’s a fringe RB2 option, but have a backup plan ready.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Philadelphia Eagles

Saquon Barkley hasn’t had a great season, but he’s still getting enough work to be considered a viable fantasy starter. He had 15 carries and four receptions for 74 yards last week, and he led the team with eight targets. His role in the passing game should continue, especially with Sterling Shepard now out for the remainder of the season, and the presence of Devontae Booker seems to be complementing him, rather than supplanting him.

This week, Barkley faces an Eagles defense that ranks eighth in aFPA to opposing running backs. It’s a tough matchup, but he should still be a solid fringe RB2 option in all leagues. Temper expectations in what could be a low-scoring affair, but his four straight games with double-digit carries give him a nice floor. Start him.

NYG RB Saquon Barkley - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Dallas Cowboys

Saquon Barkley had a nice game last week against the Chargers, gaining 95 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and three receptions. He’s losing some work to Devontae Booker, but that may actually be a good thing for him, allowing him to focus on quality touches and possibly helping him stay fresh after so many injury issues over the past year-plus.

This week, Barkley faces a Cowboys defense that ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing running backs. In a tough matchup on a miserable offense, Barkley is relegated to lower-end RB2 status this week.
