2022 Fantasy Upside
Saquon Barkley is super talented and a complete back. He has a career average of 15 carries and 4.3 receptions per game, making him a multi-faceted workhorse. Now two years removed from an ACL tear that wiped out all but two games in 2020, Barkley will be looking to cash in big before hitting free agency next offseason. The Giants helped him out by bringing in offensive-minded Head Coach Brian Daboll and by drafting mammoth tackle Evan Neal out of Alabama with the seventh overall pick in the draft. If everything goes right, Barkley has the potential to be the best back in football, a moniker he was well on his way to earning after his standout rookie year in 2018.
2022 Fantasy Downside
Unfortunately, a lot needs to go right for Barkley to reach his incredible promise. Daboll will need to have a quick impact on an offense that was 31st in the league in points scored last year. The offensive line will need to gel quickly in order to provide above-average blocking. Most importantly, Barkley will need to stay healthy. He was nicked up throughout last season, missing four games and playing hobbled throughout the year. While all those things are very possible, investing heavily in Barkley assumes they’ll all go right. That could be a big risk.
2022 Bottom Line
Barkley was more enticing as a third-round option early in the offseason. As the hype around him has increased, his ADP has risen into the second round, where fantasy managers are banking on him to anchor their teams. He might do it and we have him ranked as a fringe top-10 running back, but it’s definitely a risk to take him at cost.
