Scouting report

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Minnesota Vikings
Robert Tonyan's Week 1 status remains up in the air as we head into the regular season, but he did return to team drills last week and was activated off the PUP list earlier in August. If he is active, Tonyan will have an interesting role as he could be one of the top pass-catching options in Green Bay following the departure of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling this offseason. Keep an eye of Green Bay's injury report on Wednesday, but if Tonyan gets the go-ahead he makes for an interesting streaming option as a TE1.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Robert Tonyan returns to a Packers team with gaping holes in their target distribution from last season. Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are gone, leaving a whopping 223 targets available to be absorbed by Tonyan and his fellow pass catchers. Tonyan was frustrating last year, and eventually suffered a season-ending injury, but his breakout 2020 season saw him post a 52-586-11 line as he formed a great rapport with Aaron Rodgers, particularly in the red zone. Tonyan will be one of the more veteran pass catchers in Green Bay this season along with Allen Lazard and Sammy Watkins. Tonyan has the potential to be one of Rodgers' top targets this season, and that type of player is the type you want at the tight end spot should you stick to RBs and WRs early in drafts.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Tonynan is still recovering from the season-ending ACL tear he suffered in Week 8 of last season. While there is hope he will be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, it is not clear he will be as of this writing. Should Tonyan suffer any setbacks or start training camp on the PUP List, his draft stock would plummet accordingly. Even if he is healthy, Tonyan will return to a drastically different offense, largely due to the absence of Adams. It is possible the Packers offense sees some regression this season, and that would necessarily dampen Tonyan's fantasy outlook.

2022 Bottom Line
Tonyan's fantasy outlook largely hinges on his health and the updates we get throughout the Summer. If he is healthy heading into training camp, Tonyan makes for an interesting TE1 flier in the later rounds as the clear top pass-catching TE in Green Bay.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Arizona Cardinals

Perhaps COVID protocols for the team's top two wide receivers were just what the fantasy doctor ordered for tight end Robert Tonyan to see a fantasy-relevant target share going into Week 8. Tonyan has seen intermittent (read: low-end) usage overall in 2021, but could see a workload increase this week. The only problem is that the Arizona Cardinals rank second-lowest in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed (aFPA) to tight ends, which keeps "Big Bob" Tonyan a low-end startable option this week. Touchdown or bust.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Washington Football Team

The tight end position is a wasteland in fantasy football, and the dearth of reliable options in the middle of bye week purgatory is the one thing keeping Robert Tonyan a viable option here. Over the past four weeks, Tonyan has averaged 1.5 catches (4.3 targets) for eight receiving yards per game. He's just not seeing enough work – and few red-zone targets – to make him worth your starting spot unless you're desperate.

Week 7 sees Tonyan's Packers host the Washington Football Team, who allow the ninth-fewest schedule-adjusted fantasy points to tight ends. By sheer lack of other options, Tonyan is our models' TE13 this week.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Cincinnati Bengals

There's always a chance for "Big Bob" Tonyan in fantasy football, but he has posted more fantasy duds than smash spots in 2021. Through four weeks, Green Bay's top tight end has just eight catches on 15 targets, and has produced more than 3.0 half-PPR fantasy points once. Tonyan is a touchdown-dependent fantasy option, and the Cincinnati Bengals are about average against the tight end position in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed. Our models project him as Week 5's TE15, so you can probably do better here.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Steelers
When he's not scoring a touchdown, Robert Tonyan just isn't a worthwhile fantasy option. He holds a 9.2% team target share – the 12th-lowest among 47 tight ends to average at least two targets per game. Tonyan does play with highly touchdown-prone passer Aaron Rodgers, so a catch-and-score is more likely for him than others at his position. Tonyan is our fantasy TE11 this week in a matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers' – the defense currently league-average in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to tight ends.

GB TE Robert Tonyan - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at 49ers
Robert Tonyan had a strong fantasy day in the Green Bay Packers' Week 2 win, bringing in 52 receiving yards and a touchdown on three catches – a 12.7-point half-PPR performance for "Big Bobby". The only hazard to starting him week-in, week-out is a limited workload; he has just seven targets through two games and there is no sign that his 12.1% team target share will improve any time soon.

Add in the fact that the San Francisco 49ers are the worst schedule-adjusted defense for fantasy tight ends, and you have a recipe for a stay-away situation. Our models project Tonyan as the TE12 in fantasy because of his team's passing game upside, but there are likely better starting options for you.
