Scouting report

PHI RB Rashaad Penny - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Rashaad Penny moves to Philadelphia with a one-year contract. There will be plenty of opportunities and touches for the veteran as he splits time with D'Andre Swift. Penny was off to a good start in Seattle last season before he was injured averaging over six yards per carry. He can be viewed as the best pure rusher on this roster.

Fantasy Downside
Injuries have plagued Penny's career and that includes last season. His production and talent have always been negated by his health. And although the Eagles offense is very healthy, the backfield also has unknowns how they are going use Penny and Swift.

2023 Bottom Line
We expect Penny to be used in the running game on a regular basis to get him over 800 rushing yards this season. He will be limited in the passing game which gives him more value in standard leagues. Penny ranks a solid RB3 heading into the season and can actually be a very good value pick as he has been falling to the 10th and 11th rounds.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at New Orleans Saints

Rashaad Penny remains the main attraction in the Seattle backfield, especially after going for 151 yards and two touchdowns against the Lions. It's definitely a tougher matchup this week. The Saints have been very solid against the run this season, so Penny will be hard-pressed to duplicate his success from last week. That said, he is still the lead back and Seattle looks better on offense, so Penny at least warrants flex consideration.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Detroit Lions

Seattle had a spark on offense last week against the Falcons and Rashaad Penny had a small part of that with 66 yards on 14 carries. However, he has yet to score a touchdown this season. That could very well change this week against the easiest matchup in our rankings versus running backs. The Lions are allowing over 30 points per game to opposing fantasy running backs this season. If there's a week for Penny to finally find the end zone, this is the week. He's no better than a flex option, but he has upside.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Atlanta Falcons

The game got away from Seattle pretty early, so Rashaad Penny had very little opportunities against the 49ers, seeing just six rushing attempts. Seattle also started getting Kenneth Walker more involved. This week should be much better for Penny. The Falcons rank 28th in DVOA against the run.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at San Francisco 49ers

Monday night was pretty rough overall in Seattle, but with Kenneth Walker still banged up, one thing that was clear Monday was this is still Rashaad Penny's backfield while Walker is out. Seattle running backs received 13 carries Monday. Penny had 12 of them. He posted 60 yards and also caught two passes. Penny remains a flex option until Walker comes back and actually eats into Penny's workload. He faces a tough task, however, going on the road against the 49ers. He totaled just 62 yards in Week 13 last season. The last time he played in San Francisco? Week 17 of 2020 with just 19 yards, though he was only a few weeks removed from returning from an ACL injury.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Denver Broncos

It's going to be the Rashaad Penny show on Monday night. Kenneth Walker is unlikely to play against the Broncos as he is dealing with a hernia. So it will be Penny running the show after he broke out in a big way at the end of last season with four games of at least 130 rushing yards, including 190 in the season finale against the Cardinals. Of course, that was all with Russell Wilson at quarterback. Wilson now will be on the visiting sideline this week and Geno Smith will run the show. Still, Penny will get plenty of touches and should be a flex-worthy option this week.

SEA RB Rashaad Penny - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Rashaad Penny came back from injury and tore it up down the stretch, likely winning some championships for fantasy owners along the way. Penny finished with over 130 yards rushing in four of the final five weeks of the season to go along with six touchdowns. And now there is no Chris Carson to take carries away after Carson retired due to his nagging neck injury.

2022 Fantasy Downside
While Carson is no longer in the mix, the Seahawks drafted Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker in the second round, when many thought they would draft Liberty QB Malik Willis. In fact, Walker was the second running back taken after the Jets selected Iowa State RB Breece Hall at No. 36. Seattle will want to see what Walker has at some point, which may put a cap on Penny’s upside. Penny has also missed 43% of the team's games with injury since entering the league in 2018.

2022 Bottom Line
Penny will begin the season as the starter in Seattle as he looks to carry his momentum over from 2021. The Seattle backfield isn’t as crowded as before, but Walker is ready and Seattle does still have DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer sprinkled in as well.
