Scouting report

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at New England Patriots

As expected, Raheem Mostert owned the Dolphins' backfield to start the season. He ran 10 times for 37 yards with a touchdown while catching both of his two targets for 13 yards. Mostert played on 73% of the offensive snaps, which was the most among any RB or WR on the team. Mostert should once again play a heavy workload in Week 2 since Jeff Wilson is still out and Devon Achane was randomly inactive. Mostert faces the Patriots in Week 2, a team he played twice last season. In the second game of 2022, Mostert caught eight passes for 62 yards and a touchdown. We wouldn't expect that again, but it's promising to know Mostert had some success against this team. Mostert should be viewed as a solid RB2 option this week.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Raheem Mostert opens the season in a promising position. Fellow running back Jeff Wilson is on IR, which leaves Salvon Ahmed and rookie Devon Achane as his competition. Ahmed isn't anything special, and we have to wait and see how much Miami trusts its rookie. Mostert also draws a favorable matchup against the Chargers who gave up the 7th-most average fantasy points to running backs a season ago. When Mostert faced the Chargers last season he ran 11 times for 37 yards and caught one pass for seven yards. Mostert should be viewed as a solid RB2 play in Week 1.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert had a solid first season with Miami, topping 1,000 scrimmage yards (1,093 to be exact) in a season for the first time in his career. Mostert had a career-high 181 carries for 891 yards for a solid 4.9 carry average. He was solid as a receiving threat as well, catching 31 passes for 202 yards. Mostert only signed a one-year deal in 2022, but his production led Miami to sign him to another deal so he’ll be staying in 2023. Given his production last year, Mostert should still maintain a sizable role in Miami’s offense.

Fantasy Downside
Mostert started to see his touches decline last season when Jeff Wilson was brought in at the trade deadline. Wilson played his first game in Week 9 and in the eight games after, Mostert saw 10+ carries just three times (compared to six times in the eight games prior). Not only is Wilson back this season, but Miami also spent one of their four draft picks on a promising rookie in Devon Achane. All three backs are likely to see a solid chunk of playing time this season, which means touches overall could be tough to come by.

2023 Bottom Line
Our current projections have Mostert being Miami’s primary ball carrier this season. He’ll likely lead the team in rush attempts and rush yards with little usage as a receiving threat. In terms of fantasy points, we’re projecting Achane to be the better option there given his versatility. The gap closes a lot more when it comes to standard scoring. Mostert still has some of the best speed among running backs in the league, so he’ll likely have a few breakout games if he’s able to break off a big run. But on a week-to-week basis, he’ll likely put up low-end RB3 numbers, especially given his lack of touchdowns. He should be viewed in the RB40-RB50 range as a late-round flier.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New England Patriots

Jeff Wilson returned to the lineup last week, which meant a running back split between him and Raheem Mostert. It was a pretty even split as Mostert played 52% of the offensive snaps compared to 60% for Wilson with both of them receiving 10 touches. They pretty even on production as well with Mostert getting 49 scrimmage yards to Wilson's 40. Wilson ended up scoring a touchdown, though. The two backs should continue to split touches pretty evenly moving forward, which is bad news for both backs. The Dolphins already rank 6th for fewest rush yards in the league, and neither back has been a strong receiving threat. Plus they get a tough matchup against the Patriots (4th aFPA) this week. Mostert should be viewed as a desperation RB3/flex option for Week 17.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Green Bay Packers

Jeff Wilson was inactive last week, so Raheem Mostert ended up running wild against the Bills. Mostert finished with 136 yards on 17 carries, adding an additional 20 yards on one catch. Granted, most of Mostert's production came on a single 67-yard run, but it was still a nice outing from the running back. Mike McDaniel said Wilson was close to playing last week, so we'd anticipate him being back this week, which would obviously hurt Mostert's value. Still, Mostert should see enough volume to be a viable option in a favorable matchup vs. the Packers (26th aFPA). We like Mostert as a lower-end RB2 option for Week 16.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

Raheem Mostert got a boost in playing time last week as Jeff Wilson suffered a hip injury. Mostert still didn't do a whole lot, rushing 11 times for 37 yards while catching one pass for seven yards. He'll likely be in line for more touches once again as Wilson is listed as questionable heading into this week. Although it'll be a tough matchup for Mostert against the Bills (8th aFPA). Mostert didn't do a whole lot in his earlier matchup against Buffalo this season, rushing eight times for 11 yards. There's also a matter of an expected blizzard for this game. If Wilson is active, Mostert will be a high-end RB3, but if Wilson is inactive then Mostert should be a decent RB2 option in Week 15.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Los Angeles Chargers

Raheem Mostert out-carried Jeff Wilson last week for the first time since Wilson arrived in Miami. Although it wasn't a breakout performance for Mostert. He ran just seven times for 30 yards and didn't see any targets. In a better matchup this week against the Chargers (30th aFPA), plus with Mostert healthy again, we'll likely see a split backfield between the two runners like we saw in Week 9. Mostert should be viewed as a solid RB2 option for Week 14.
