Scouting report

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 10, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Cincinnati

Paul Perkins has some upside moving forward. His snap count has gone from 10%, to 27%, to 34% over his last three games and his 11 carries last week against the Eagles matched the number of carries starter Rashad Jennings received. With Jennings being largely ineffective, the door is open for Perkins to earn a role.

This week might be too early to count on him, but he has some upside against a Bengals run defense that has allowed 116.1 yards per game to opposing teams. He’s a long shot to get a large enough workload to be valuable, but if you’re desperate, he should get you a few points as his role expands. He’s an excellent stash option in all leagues right now.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 9, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Philadelphia

Paul Perkins has some upside against the Eagles this week if he gets touches. The Eagles allow 4.7 yards per carry to opposing rushers and starter Rashad Jennings has been largely ineffective this season, even while healthy. Still, Perkins has only had 10 carries this season, spread out over the past four games, making it risky to bank on the rookie. It wouldn’t surprise me if he starts to steal more work from Jennings, but I want to see it first before I recommend starting him.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - Week 7, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Los Angeles
Paul Perkins actually got 10 percent of the snaps last week, carrying the ball twice and catching two passes for a total of 26 yards. He’s not worth starting yet, but he’s definitely worth an exploratory roster addition in larger leagues if you have room to stash a player. Orleans Darkwa hasn’t been effective, Bobby Rainey has been more of a pass-catching back for the Giants, and Rashad Jennings has been injured and ineffective this season. Perkins has value as a stash option only right now.

NYG RB Paul Perkins - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Paul Perkins was very productive that last two years at UCLA, rushing for 2,918 yards and 23 touchdowns combined. He also caught 30 balls last year, showing some natural ability as a receiver out of the backfield. Perkins runs with a low center of gravity and sees the field well. He’s versatile, competitive, and was one of the more accomplished pass blockers available in the draft, which could allow him to earn playing time. If something happens to 31-year-old Rashad Jennings, Perkins could be in line for a full workload.

Fantasy Downside
Perkins will be battling with Andre Williams and Orleans Darkwa for backup duties, and the Giants have invested in Shane Vereen as their third down back. This might make for a difficult climb up the depth chart for the rookie fifth-round pick. Also, Jennings may be 31, but he’s been productive for the Giants in spurts and is currently healthy. As long as that remains the case, he’ll most likely remain the starter over Perkins and the rest.

2016 Bottom Line
If you’re in a large league and looking for deep sleepers, or if you have the roster room to stash away a player who might not touch the ball all season, then Perkins is an intriguing fantasy option. He has the skills to be a starter, and a chance to beat out the other guys on the roster, giving him some level of value. However, he’s most likely a better option for dynasty players than re-drafters right now and will likely go undrafted in most leagues.
