Broncos RB Montee Ball (groin) did not practice Wednesday. Ball will reportedly miss at least two weeks, maybe longer. Ronnie Hillman and Juwan Thompson were active ahead of C.J. Anderson in Week 5, though Thompson’s role on special teams may have something to do with that. Hillman got 15 carries against the Cardinals, while Thompson got three carries for 15 yards and a TD. Anderson and Thompson will likely compete for snaps behind Hillman, who won’t be a full-time back.

Montee Ball (groin) won't need surgery, will miss 'several' weeks

Broncos running back Montee Ball will not require surgery to repair the strained groin he suffered during a non-contact play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

However, Ball is expected to be sidelined several weeks, according to two NFL sources. Ball underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam Monday.

Ball was averaging 3.1 yards per carry this season when he went down in the third quarter Sunday. Although he finished his game against the Arizona Cardinals with only 7 yards on six carries, he had a 5-yard run on the play before his injury.

Fantasy Impact:

The timetable seems to be 2-3 weeks. Ball hasn't been the same back since he underwent an emergency appendectomy in early August. While out just two weeks, he didn't get time in the preseason. The Post reports that Ronnie Hillman is expected to lead the way with C.J. Anderson and rookie Juwan Thompson backing him up.

Broncos running back Montee Ball suffered a groin injury on Sunday that could keep him off the field for weeks.

A source told Mike Klis of the Denver Post that the Broncos think Ball will be “out for a while,” although they won’t know for sure until he has an MRI today.

The injury, which Ball suffered while blocking, limited Ball to just six carries for seven yards on Sunday. Ball has disappointed as the Broncos’ starting running back this year, averaging just 3.1 yards a carry through four games.

Fantasy Impact:

It hasn't been a good year for fantasy owners who took Ball. Although the schedule was going to ease up, the next couple weeks did figure to be difficult at least on paper (Jets Week 6 and 49ers Week 7). As the story pointed out, the good news is that the Broncos’ backup running backs played well after Ball went down: Ronnie Hillman had 15 carries for 64 yards, and Juwan Thompson had three carries for 15 yards and a touchdown. Hillman figures to be a solid pickup this week. The Jets rush defense was among the tops in the league, but was torched by San Diego's Branden Oliver in Week 5 which bodes well for Hillman in Week 6.
