The Browns may utilize a two-RB set that features both Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty.

"How we used those guys would be based on who's healthy and available each week. If we have a roster where we're going in and playing a game where Montario and Peyton are both available I think it makes sense to put them in there a small percentage of the time."

What should stand out in Shurmur's statement is the phrase "small percentage."

Don't expect to see Hillis and Hardesty on the field at the same time very often, but the rumored package could open up a lot of possibilities if used sparingly.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said he's not certain about depth at running back behind Peyton Hillis.

He's encouraged by the progress of Montario Hardesty from knee surgery and rookie Owen Marecic, but concerned by Brandon Jackson's toe injury and rookie Armond Smith's fumbles.

The Cleveland Browns are figuring out their running back situation as they prepare for the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

The running back spot is still a question for the Browns as they prepare for their final preseason game against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field and begin to trim the roster down to 53 players for the Sept. 11 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Peyton Hillis is the No. 1 option after a season in which he rushed for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns on 270 carries and caught 61 passes for 477 yards, but the team is working on finding his back-up.

Veteran Brandon Jackson is currently out of the lineup due to a toe injury and Montario Hardesty is still battling back from a knee injury that ended his rookie season before it really got started.

"I don’t know what to think in terms of the durability there right now," Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said Sunday. “We’ve got a couple guys, a guy that’s coming back from injury and one that’s banged up right now."

Shurmur added, "We’re keeping our eyes open at a lot of positions to possibly help bolster the roster, but we’ll see how that goes as we finish our fourth preseason game."

The seasons of Cleveland Browns starting left guard Eric Steinbach (disk) and third-down running back Brandon Jackson (toe) are in doubt because of their injuries.

Both players could end up on injured reserve for the season depending on how their injuries progress over the next few days or week.

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur indicated it's uncertain if Steinbach, who has started the past four seasons with the team at left guard, will be able to play this year.

As for Jackson, Shurmur acknowledged he will be out "for an extended period."

Jackson, who was signed as a free agent from Green Bay, suffered the toe injury during the second preseason game against the Lions and is wearing a cast. At first, the injury was described as turf toe, but now, Shurmur is calling it a more generic toe injury.

The Browns will continue to monitor Jackson to see if he can contribute at some point this season. If not, he'll also be a candidate for injured reserve.

Fortunately for the Browns, running back Montario Hardesty is on the mend and passed the first test of his surgically repaired left knee Thursday night in Philadelphia. Hardesty ran five times for 15 yards in one series in the first quarter before Shurmur sat him down.

Fantasy Impact:

Hardesty becomes more appealing if Jackson is out for awhile. The lost of Steinbach is a negative for the entire Cleveland offense.
