Rams quarterback Sam Bradford made all the throws during a short practice yesterday, making a fast recovery from a bruised index finger.

A special glove designed to increase blood flow to the injury and reduce swelling may have helped get him back on the field quickly.

Bradford said although there was some soreness, the finger felt “10 times better’’ than it did on Monday, the day after the Rams’ opening 31-13 loss to the Eagles. The original plan didn’t call for him to do any throwing before today, and Bradford hadn’t been that optimistic.

“I couldn’t tell a bit,’’ wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker said. “He looked great to me.’’

Throw another name into the hat in an already-crowded wideout competition in St. Louis. In re-signing with the Rams, Mark Clayton brings a veteran presence with good speed and yard-after-the-catch skills.

Clayton showed he was a quick study last season in picking up the offense quickly, so learning the Josh McDaniels scheme shouldn't be a problem. But Clayton's surgically repaired knee (more precisely, his patellar tendon) isn't quite 100 percent.

If he goes on PUP/reserve, which is likely, he will be sidelined at least six weeks. But St. Louis is a good fit for Clayton and he has a very good chemistry with quarterback Sam Bradford.

Clayton is the team's ninth wideout, and the Rams are expected to keep six or seven. Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery, Brandon Gibson and Mike Sims-Walker appear to have jobs locked up. The final two or three spots will be decided from among Danario Alexander, Mardy Gilyard and rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas. If Clayton starts on PUP/reserve list, the team won’t have to worry about clearing a roster spot for him until mid-October or later.

The Rams are happy to have Mike Sims-Walker, and the feeling is mutual.

"We've always liked him," general manager Billy Devaney said. "He was nicked a little bit last year with an ankle (injury) that hampered him. He tried to play through it, but you could see that he wasn't 100 percent. The guy scored 14 touchdowns over the last two years, so he's got some ability. That's what we were looking for — a bigger guy that can run a little bit."

"They don't know how excited I am to be here," he said. "This is a blessing. I call it the perfect situation. I wouldn't want to be nowhere else."

Why perfect?

"Sam Bradford. Josh McDaniels. The wide receiver corps that we do have," Sims-Walker said. "Very underrated. I promise you. Very underrated. I train with some of the best receivers in the game. I've seen a lot, I've studied a lot of the best receivers in the game. Trust me, these guys are right there. We've just got to get it together, go out here and grind every day, compete with each other, and we'll be fine."

Fantasy Impact: 

With Josh McDaniels calling the plays and Sam Bradford throwing the ball, there is a lot of potential the St. Louis offense for one or two receivers to break out. Danny Amendola and Mike Sims-Walker seem to be the best bests, and Lance Kendricks has a lot of upside at TE.

QB Sam Bradford finds new targets for touchdowns

Quarterback Sam Bradford led St. Louis to a pair of touchdowns, and the Rams’ defense made life miserable for Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel as the Rams defeated the Chiefs 14-10 Friday night in Kansas City.

Bradford was 8 of 8 for 76 yards on his first two series, with scoring passes of 6 yards to Mike Sims-Walker and 11 yards to rookie tight end Lance Kendricks. Bradford finished with 95 yards passing in his most significant dress rehearsal before the Rams’ opener against Philadelphia.

When the reigning NFL offensive rookie of the year wasn’t slicing up the Chiefs’ struggling defense, Steven Jackson was pounding it into submission. The big running back carried 15 times for 72 yards as St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo played his starters the entire first half.

The Chiefs also played their first team until halftime, with much different results.

Cassel was 6 of 13 for 59 yards and was sacked for an 11-yard loss, while Kansas City’s top-ranked rushing attack produced just 14 yards on six first-half attempts. Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones, who combined for 2,363 yards rushing in 2010, each carried twice for 8 yards.

Fantasy Impact: 

Bradford wasn't as sharp after his hot start. Nevertheless, it was very encouraging to see him click with Kendricks and Sims-Walker, who are adding a breath of fresh air to the St. Louis passing game. At a minimum, Bradford looks like a very solid QB2. Kansas City can't seem to find any momentum.
