Scouting report

SD WR Malcom Floyd - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle
Malcom Floyd returned to action after a horrible neck injury nearly a year ago. Floyd caught four balls for 50 yards on six targets and added a touchdown.

This week he gets another tough matchup against the Seahawks, who are ranked third in allowing fantasy points to WRs. The good news is Floyd could again draw single coverage if the Seahawks want to take WR Keenan Allen away. Either way, Floyd is a risky play but the matchups get better in the near future so if he's on your wire, you may want to grab him for some depth and bye weeks.

SD WR Malcom Floyd - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Arizona
After a horrible injury last year, Malcom Floyd returns in 2014. He was considered the training camp MVP for San Diego, and while that may not hold a lot of stock, it's at least a sign he's back and ready to go.

Floyd has looked great this offseason, and is a much-needed WR2 option for QB Philip Rivers after Vincent Brown was a bust last season and since released. With Keenan Allen likely to see a lot of CB Patrick Peterson this week, it may very well open up Floyd for some more targets. Still, there's not a lot of reason to get too excited as Floyd ranks just 56th on our list in what isn't a great overall matchup.

SD WR Malcom Floyd - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
When Floyd was carted off the field after suffering a serious neck injury last season, there was doubt about whether or not he'd be able to play football again. The unexpected return of Malcom Floyd from a serious neck injury gives the Chargers a receiver who can stretch the field vertically opposite Keenan Allen. Floyd has flashed sure hands and playmaking ability in training camp. Prior to that, he Chargers tested Floyd on a daily basis. He was typically the most-targeted pass-catcher during June mini-camp and OTA sessions, and won more than he lost. No one tackled him, but Chargers defenders went hard at the 6-5 receiver. Assuming Floyd picks up where he left off, he provides a legitimate threat opposite Allen.

Fantasy Downside
The last time Floyd played in a game, he suffered a season-ending neck injury that some feared would be career-ending as well. He appears to be fully recovered, but neck issues can be tricky. It's worth watching.

Bottom Line
The Chargers didn't add a clear-cut starter across from Allen and Vincent Brown has been a disappointment, so Floyd's a good bet to stay there if his neck is sound and his production hasn't slipped because of the injury or inactivity. If he's on the field, Floyd is a viable prospect in TD-only leagues.
