BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Lorenzo Taliaferro vs. Indianapolis

Lorenzo Taliaferro got change-of-pace work on Sunday against the Panthers and wound up with 15 carries for 58 yards and a touchdown. He was impressive for the second straight week, even if most of his touches were in the second half after the Ravens were already well in control of the game.

Taliaferro faces the 13th ranked Colts rush defense this week, but that number is a little deceiving since the Jaguars and Titans were both forced to abandon the run against Indianapolis the last two weeks. The biggest deterrent to starting the bruising rookie Taliaferro is the fact that he’s part of a three-headed backfield. He and Justin Forsett have looked better than Bernard Pierce, but until we’re sure that this threesome becomes a twosome, I think it’s tough to view any of them as solid starters. We have Taliaferro just on the fringe of RB3 territory.

BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Lorenzo Taliaferro vs. Carolina

Lorenzo Taliaferro filled in nicely for the injured Bernard Pierce last week against the Browns and wound up with 18 carries, 91 yards, and a touchdown to help the Ravens come away with a close win.

Taliaferro is a big bruising back who should continue to challenge for the starting job, even with Pierce back. With a tough matchup against Carolina this week, and the backfield situation still murky in Baltimore, fantasy owners should take a wait-and-see approach with the rookie, but he’s worth adding to your roster and could be a gem down the line.

BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Lorenzo Taliaferro vs. Cleveland
Lorenzo Taliaferro didn’t get any work last week but he was active on gameday, and if Bernard Pierce continues to underwhelm, then it’s very possible he’ll get some touches. Until that actually happens though, it’s hard to trust the powerful rookie back, and fantasy owners shouldn’t yet add him to their rosters.

BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Lorenzo Taliaferro vs. Pittsburgh
Lorenzo Taliaferro didn’t get any carries in his first game as a pro behind the miserable Bernard Pierce and the surprisingly effective Justin Forsett. Expect Taliaferro to challenge Pierce for playing time moving forward, but he’s unlikely to see significant touches against the Steelers this week and is still a stash away or waiver wire guy for the time being.

BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Lorenzo Taliaferro vs. Cincinnati
The Ravens will count on Bernard Pierce the next two weeks with Ray Rice suspended, but rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro could get a few carries as well. He’ll be vying for snaps with free agent addition Justin Forsett, so his fantasy value is minimal at this time, but keep an eye on how the ground game works this weekend. If Taliaferro outperforms the incumbent Pierce, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Ravens go with the hot hand.

BAL RB Lorenzo Taliaferro - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Lorenzo Taliaferro is a 226 pound fourth-round rookie out of Coastal Carolina and is a bruising running back with the kind of power to move the pile and punish would-be-tacklers. He’s fighting for a spot on the depth chart right now, but he has young and powerful legs on a roster that struggled running the ball last year.

Fantasy Upside
If the rest of the running backs on the Ravens depth chart struggle, Head Coach John Harbaugh won’t hesitate to throw Taliaferro into the mix. He showed the kind of power that was expected of him against the 49ers in the pre-season and he proved he has a nose for the end zone in college, scoring 27 touchdowns in his final season. Taliaferro has the kind of one-cut ability to excel in the Ravens’ new zone blocking scheme, and he’s a decisive runner who plays angry.

Fantasy Downside
As a fourth round rookie, entering the season fourth on the depth chart, it’s very possible that Taliaferro doesn’t get any playing time at all this season. While he was productive at Coastal Carolina, he’s also a player who doesn’t have any traits that pop out at you. He’s a powerful runner, but he doesn’t have unusual size. He can hit the hole quickly, but nobody is confusing his speed or agility with that of Jamaal Charles. Taliaferro is a just a productive runner with good vision. If the Ravens running game improves at all this year, the rookie could be looking from the outside in.

Bottom Line
Taliaferro isn’t worth drafting at this point unless you’re in a very deep league with a large number of roster spots where you can stash dynasty players. Even then, he’s risky. He’ll likely make the roster, but unless there are multiple injuries in front of him, or if last season proves not to be a fluke for starter Ray Rice and backup Bernard Pierce, Taliaferro will likely be an afterthought. He’s an intriguing option to keep an eye on after the season starts, but his opportunity is too limited to warrant serious fantasy consideration at this time.
