Scouting report

LA TE Lance Kendricks - Week 4, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Arizona
Lance Kendricks was held without a catch on four targets in the Rams’ Week 3 win over the Bucs last Sunday. He should have caught a touchdown, but failed to get both in bounds and was instead finished with zero fantasy points. Ranked as our TE27 for Week 4, avoid Kendricks this Sunday against the Cardinals. He remains a low-end TE2 option.

LA TE Lance Kendricks - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Tampa Bay
Lance Kendricks caught 4-of-6 targets for 61 yards in the Rams’ Week 2 win over the Seahawks. Seattle did what every team that faces the Rams will do this season: load the box to stop Todd Gurley. That game plan will provide players like Kendricks with one-on-one opportunities in the passing game, but with Case Keenum under center the Rams’ position players will remain limited. Leave Kendricks on the waiver wire for Week 3.

LA TE Lance Kendricks - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Now that Jared Cook is in Green Bay, Lance Kendricks will have a bigger role in the Rams offense. In 15 games last season, Kendricks caught just 25 passes for 245 yards with two touchdowns on 36 targets. But his numbers should increase now Cook is gone and the team upgraded at quarterback with the selection of Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft. A tight end can often be a young quarterback’s best friend and seeing as how the Rams don’t have many weapons in the passing game, Kendricks could wind up being a fantasy sleeper. Cook only turned his 75 targets into 39 receptions last year, but who’s to say Kendricks couldn’t do more with those opportunities?

Fantasy Downside
Kendricks had an opportunity to sign with the Falcons as a free agent in 2014 and decided to re-sign with the Rams after the team promised him an expanded role in the passing game. But he saw two fewer targets in 2015 than he did in 2014, catching two fewer passes, three fewer touchdowns and 14 fewer yards. Granted, Cook’s departure should create more opportunities for Kendricks, but he hasn’t been fantasy relevant since 2012 when he caught 42 passes for 519 yards and four touchdowns.

2016 Bottom Line
Kendricks isn’t worth a draft pick because he’s currently being undrafted in both 10 and 12-team leagues. That said, his targets will grow with Cook’s departure and he’s always been a solid red zone target thanks to his size and athleticism. He could wind up being a quality streaming option depending on how the Rams utilize him, so pay attention to his usage early in the season.

STL TE Lance Kendricks - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Chicago
Lance Kendricks caught both of his targets for 25 yards in the Rams Week 9 loss to the Vikings. Kendricks plays in a run-first offense with a struggling quarterback in a stagnant passing attack. He also lags behind Jared Cook for targets, which should tell you all you need to know about Kendricks' fantasy value because Cook is completely unreliable as a receiver. Leave Kendricks on your waiver wire.

STL TE Lance Kendricks - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. San Francisco
Lance Kendricks was inactive for the Rams Week 7 win over the Browns as he continues to rehab a thumb injury that required surgery. He did return to practice this week and could see more work in the passing game after Jared Cook lost a fumble in the win over Cleveland. Cook also continues to rack up dropped passes on a weekly basis, so perhaps the Rams are ready to give Kendricks more work. Either way, Kendricks is currently off the fantasy radar with the Rams operating a run-heavy, ball-controlled offense. The team's passing game is a mess.

STL TE Lance Kendricks - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Arizona
Lance Kendricks caught just two-of-five targets for 12 yards in the Rams Week 3 loss to the Steelers. He also dropped a long pass inside the 10 yard line that could have gone for a score had he not lost the ball in the lights. With St. Louis unable to run the ball and with no reliable vertical options, Kendricks could make a decent weapon for Nick Foles in the short-to-intermediate passing game. But with Jared Cook still playing an average of 81 percent of the snaps, it doesn't appear the Rams are interested in growing Kendricks' role. Avoid him.

STL TE Lance Kendricks - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Washington
Lance Kendricks caught both of his targets for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Rams overtime win over the Seahawks in Week 1. His touchdown came on a fly route when safety Dion Bailey fell and left Kendricks wide open for the score. While the Rams have liked to get Kendricks the ball in the flats while at the goal line, he doesn't get enough looks in the passing game to justify a fantasy start. Leave him on your waiver wire for Week 2.
