Cowboys hope to use Jason Witten more in red zone

It sounds crazy, but tight end Jason Witten has been an afterthought in the Dallas Cowboys' red-zone offense.

The eight-time Pro Bowler caught a NFL-record 110 catches for a tight end in 2012, and his 1,039 receiving yards tied for fourth-most in league history at that position.

He was targeted just once in 2012 and it resulted in a touchdown. Meanwhile, the top four red-zone scorers last season were tight ends -- Rob Gronkowski, Heath Miller, Kyle Rudolph and Tony Gonzalez. Dez Bryant led the Cowboys with three red-zone scores, tied for 18th in the NFL.

Fantasy Impact:

The story points out that Witten's responsibilities are different in the red zone. There are times where he has to help block a defensive end or outside linebacker and, by the time he releases into the field of play to become a target, quarterback Tony Romo has already gone through his progressions. The Cowboys hope the offensive line improves in 2013 so Witten won't have to chip in as much. And with a focus on two tight-end sets, perhaps James Hanna or Gavin Escobar will block so Witten can become a target. It all spells good news for owners of Witten, who is easily a top-five TE in any format, but we especially like him in PPR formats, ranking him second behind stud Jimmy Graham.

"The bottom line with [Jarius Wright] is he knows what to do all of the time," Vikings offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. "He can help the other guys in that room. With all of the new faces in the receiving room, he helps them in the meeting room, during the drills and also of course when they break the huddle."

The 5-foot-10 Wright initially was pigeon-holed as a slot receiver, but has shown an ability to get down the field on the perimeter. He had three catches for 65 yards and a touchdown in Week 10 and finished the season with 22 catches for 310 yards and two scores in the final seven games.

No one expects Wright to fill Harvin's production on his own, but showing that he is capable of being a threat could help take the opposing defense's eye off of Adrian Peterson, Jennings and tight end Kyle Rudolph on occasion.

Fantasy Impact:

Given the current state of the Minnesota receiving corps, it's not inconceivable that Wright could see a lot of snaps in the slot and also in a rotation with Jerome Simpson and Cordarelle Patterson on the outside.

While Greg Jennings and Cordarelle Patterson adjusted to their new team, Jarius Wright was the most productive receiver during the practices I watched. At the moment, the Vikings have locked him into the slot position while Jennings and Simpson work on the outside. But Wright said: "I'm trying to prove I'm not just an inside guy. I want them to see I can play on the outside, too."

Fantasy Impact:

Wright is a player to monitor, but it's doubtful that the Vikings pass offense can support more than a couple of receivers and right now it looks like Jennings and TE Kyle Rudolph will lead the team in targets.

What separates good tight ends from great tight ends is making the tough catch and the ability to stretch a defense and make big plays. While Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph and QB Christian Ponder have yet to develop a deep downfield rapport, Rudolph has become Ponder’s security blanket in the red zone – the area of the field inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

In two seasons, Vikings quarterbacks have thrown to Rudolph 23 times in the red zone. He has caught 20 of them – a whopping 87 percent of those throws. They weren’t always accurate. They weren’t always easy. But he made them.

For the purpose of comparison, in that same span, Antonio Gates has caught 67 percent of red zone passes thrown his way. Rob Gronkowski has caught 65 percent. Tony Gonzalez has caught 63 percent. Heath Miller has caught 60 percent. Jimmy Graham has caught 53 percent.

Fantasy Impact:

Rudolph hasn't had enough non-red zone opportunities to be ranked among the league's elite TEs, though he certainly has upside in 2013.
