Jamaal Charles (foot) likely to sit out preseason

A league source tells PFT that Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles will not play against the 49ers in the Alex Smith Bowl on Friday night as a result of the foot injury he suffered earlier this week. As coach Andy Reid said on Pro Football Talk on NBCSN earlier this week, Charles would play if this were a regular season game but it isn’t and there’s not much sense risking further injury to a player who will do a lot of heavy lifting on offense for K.C. this season.

Third-round pick Knile Davis will get a chance to show off his skills in Charles’ absence with Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray also moving up a notch on the depth chart for this game and, it seems, the rest of the summer.

Fantasy Impact:

There's no point in bringing Charles back unnecessarily for a meaningless preseason games. The Chiefs know that he'll be able to do what they need him to do when the games start to count.

Fantasy Impact:

This indicates that Charles's injury is not serious. Expect him back later in the preseason. Owners should try to acquire Knile Davis as his handcuff.

RB Knile Davis, the Chiefs' third-round draft pick, stepped into Jamaal Charles' place with the first-team offense for the remainder of Monday's practice. Davis had already moved past veteran Shaun Draughn and second-year running back Cyrus Gray to No. 2 on the depth chart.

"He went down. I had to get in, step in and play my role," Davis said. "[Reid's] whole goal was to build a team where if one man went down the next man would step up."

Reid said that the reps that Davis got with the first-team offense were invaluable.

Fantasy Impact:

In Philly, Andy Reid always had a reliable backup to Brian Westbrook in Correll Buckhalter. When BWest would go down, Buck always stepped in and got the bulk of the carries as Reid rarely, if at all, used a committee approach at RB. If you're a Charles owner, Davis may be a guy to target late in drafts as a potential handcuff. He should be around very late, and you may even get a lot of "who?" responses...

Jamaal Charles will "stack Pro Bowls on Pro Bowls" in new offense

“This offense might be the best thing that ever happened to me,” Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles said. “I think this offense will get me open. They’re going to throw me the ball more. I think I’ll continue to stack Pro Bowls on Pro Bowls if I can stay healthy.

“I definitely know my role. I’ve got a lot of stuff to program in my mind right now. There’s a lot of stuff in the Andy Reid offense, the same stuff he did with [Brian Westbrook] and [LeSean McCoy], and I think I fit his scheme as well as they did. Definitely more studying and definitely more knowing the scheme of the defense, especially when I go out there and play another position like wide receiver. I go in there and try to read the defense. I feel like this year it will be more than I catch out of the backfield.”

In drafting Knile Davis, the Chiefs may be preparing for the eventual end of Charles’ career. But judging by how they used Charles in offseason practice, they don’t see that time coming soon.

We have Charles as our #4 RB in standard formats and #3 in PPR. He is right there with Doug Martin in both formats.
