James Starks came to Green Bay a new player this season.

For one, he's finally healthy. Injuries had dogged the running back since his junior year at the University at Buffalo. And two, he's bigger. Following a strict diet, Starks added eight pounds this offseason. He's up to 225.

Considering Starks is already taller than his peers at 6-foot-1, adding bulk was a good idea. Now, he hopes it helps him in the battle for carries with Ryan Grant.

Grant remains the No. 1 back right now. Back from his season-ending ankle injury, he's been working with the first team and playing well himself. But as all players at this position know, things can change on a dime during the course of the season. Mike McCarthy prefers the hot hand.

Fantasy Impact: 

Grant is shaping up as a nice value in the middle rounds as a RB3, but this situation could be fluid if Starks starts to outplay him.

A cult hero is returning to Green Bay - the Packers have re-signed running back John Kuhn.

Fantasy Impact: 

Kuhn generated some mild buzz last year. However, the emergence of James Starks and the return of Ryan Grant has crushed his fantasy value. Fantasy owners need to look elsewhere for a cult hero.

At running back, the first snap at Packers practice Saturday night belonged to veteran Ryan Grant. Grant, who missed most of 2010 with an ankle injury, practiced without limitations.

"I thought Ryan looked very well," Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He had a couple of runs that came out of there. He looked like his old self."

Fantasy Impact: 

There has been a lot of hype about James Starks after last year's Super Bowl run, but Grant was a solid starter before his injury and is going to play a prominent role in the Green Bay backfield. He could be a bargain on draft day.

WSSP Milwaukee: After missing most of last year with an injury, are you still considered the starter?:

Packers RB Ryan Grant: “I would think so. I don’t know. From what I’ve heard, that’s the conversation that was told to me. … I was told that by [former running backs coach Edgar Bennett], initially. Jerry [Fontenot, the new position coach] didn’t tell me that anything changed. Jerry told me that as of right now I’m still the leader of the backfield and the expectations won’t change. … I do believe there will be competition, which is fine. I’m all for that.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Grant missed nearly all of 2010 with an ankle injury while rookie James Starks came on strong in the playoffs as the Packers workhorse. The Packers also drafted rookie RB Alex Green in the 3rd round. This will be a camp battle to keep an eye on with a committee attack likely.
