Packers HC Mike McCarthy said he was hopeful the 250-pound John Kuhn would be back for the Lions game, in which case he'd likely resume his role as the third-down specialist because of his skill set: picking up the blitz, catching the ball out of the backfield and pushing the pile in short-yardage situations.

"I think John will probably slide right back into that third-down role," Van Pelt said. "It's obviously a strength of his, pass protection. Alex has done a nice job the last two weeks filling in for John in that role.

"I think Aaron (Rodgers), in particular, feels comfortable with John back there."

Fantasy Impact: 

Kuhn resuming third-down duties would obviously put a dent in the value of Alex Green, who is already losing carries to James Starks.

This is the way running backs Alex Green and James Starks were used Sunday: Alex Green got all of the snaps in the no-huddle and third down, and James Starks was used in normal down-and-distance situations.

The alternating worked pretty well. Starks gained 61 yards on 17 carries, while Green ran for 53 on 11 carries.

Fantasy Impact: 

It was too early for coach Mike McCarthy to commit to using the same strategy when the Packers come out of their bye in Week 10 and face the Lions in Week 11. But compared to the last several weeks where Green got the bulk of the work and was mediocre, this strategy worked well. It was Starks' first action since coming back from a turf toe injury that kept him out two months. Neither back would be all that great an option as a result, but both could be useful in deeper leagues, and especially Green deeper PPR formats.

For right now, Alex Green is Mike McCarthy's man. Not James Starks or Randall Cobb or Steven Jackson.

The Green Bay Packers coach said Monday that despite the second-year pro's feeble 2.5-yard average Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green is most deserving of the starting running back job.

"Alex, that was not his best game yesterday," McCarthy said Monday, a day after Green gained 54 yards on 22 carries in a 24-15 victory over the Jaguars. "He's seen the film and I think the corrections for a young player will definitely be applied as we move forward.

"James will probably be given more opportunities as we go through the week, but there are a number of different factors that are involved with that and the biggest one is Alex Green has earned these opportunities."
