Scouting report

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Jacoby Jones vs. Tampa Bay
Jacoby Jones had one catch for 30 yards against the Colts last week and he demonstrated some of the speed and playmaking ability that he’s been flashing on and off throughout his career. However, his value remains as a return man and not really as a legitimate option in the Ravens passing game, limiting his fantasy value. He should remain on waivers.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Jacoby Jones vs. Indianapolis
Jacoby Jones seems to have lost the WR3 job to Marlon Brown, but he remains a return specialist for the Ravens. He returned an 18 yard punt last week, but has seemingly been phased out of the offense entirely. While it’s always possible that he’ll catch a long touchdown in a given week, he has virtually no fantasy value and should remain on waivers.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Jacoby Jones vs. Carolina
Jacoby Jones didn’t catch a pass last week and has really been relegated to his return specialist role. There’s no reason to expect that to change this week against a tough Panthers defense in a game that should be a low scoring affair. Jones is not worth a roster spot in fantasy leagues and should remain on waivers.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Jacoby Jones vs. Cleveland
Jacoby Jones had one catch for four yards last week against the Steelers. With Steve Smith Sr., a healthy Dennis Pitta and Owen Daniels around this season, Jones has been relegated to spot duty in the offense and he has no fantasy value outside of unique leagues that allow a KR position on the roster, as he still handles both kickoff and punt returns.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Jacoby Jones vs. Pittsburgh
Jacoby Jones had two catches and 16 yards last week against the Bengals, but also had a fumble off a punt return that was luckily recovered by the Ravens deep in their own territory. He’s in no danger of losing his job as a return specialist for the Ravens, but fantasy owners should be concerned about Kamar Aiken outperforming him with four receptions and 30 yards. Jones isn’t much of a fantasy option anyway, with his only value being as a returner and the occasional recipient of a deep bomb or two, but fantasy owners probably shouldn’t have him on the roster right now with Aiken in the mix.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Jacoby Jones vs. Cincinnati
Jacoby Jones got a chance last season to be a WR2 in the Ravens’ offense, but failed to live up to the hopes of team personnel. He’ll settle back into his role as the primary return specialist this season, and will likely finish the year with right around his Baltimore averages from the past two seasons: about 400 yards and a score or two.

Jones has a tough matchup in Week 1 and is a low end fantasy option anyway, unless you’re in a league that gives points for return yardage. Outside of those types of leagues, Jones should only be on the back end of a roster, or more likely he belongs on waivers.

BAL WR Jacoby Jones - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Jacoby Jones was hurt in the first game last season and was limited to only 12 games as a result. The Ravens tried him as a sometimes starter when he came back and he finished with 37 catches, 455 yards, and only two receiving touchdowns. The Ravens will look to him more as a WR3 or WR4 this year with an emphasis on returns.

Fantasy Upside
In return yardage leagues, Jones has added value. He had three return touchdowns in 2012 and one last season, and he had nearly 900 kick return yards despite only playing in 12 games. Jones is also a pretty good deep threat, so he’ll bust out a long touchdown now and then. His best season also came when he was in Houston under new Offensive Coordinator Gary Kubiak.

Fantasy Downside
Jones will be vying for the WR3 spot, and he’s never been a reliable target. His best season was still only 562 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers seem like the best you could possibly hope for from Jones at age 30, as he’s never really produced when given the opportunity to try being a WR2.

Bottom Line
Jones is a marginal addition in return yardage leagues or in very large leagues with a deep bench, but the likelihood that he does much on offense is very small. He simply has yet to establish himself as a viable fantasy receiver in his seven years in the league, and it’s hard to imagine him changing things at this point in his career.
