Vikings third-year receiver Stephen Burton had an eye-catching day. Burton flashed throughout the afternoon, delivering big plays in a variety of ways.

His afternoon ended with a 15-yard TD grab from Matt Cassel during 11-on-11 red zone action. Earlier in the afternoon, Burton hauled in a bomb down the left sideline from Cassel and also capitalized during 7-on-7 work with a precise route up the seam that left the Vikings’ nickel defense addled and resulted in another long score.

Burton will be fighting for a roster spot as the preseason moves on with four other receivers – Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jerome Simpson and Jarius Wright – all certain to make the team. The former seventh-round pick said Jennings’ arrival has accelerated his development.

Rookie wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson has the inside track to be the Vikings' primary kick returner, a role that should not limit his availability on offense, according to coach Leslie Frazier.

Two days into his first NFL training camp, Patterson has impressed the staff with his ability to retain information and execute pro plays despite his only having one year of Division I college experience.

Fantasy Impact: 

Patterson is also seeing time on the first team at WR on the opposite side of Greg Jennings. The Vikes desperately need someone to step into the WR2 role with the loss of Percy Harvin and Patterson has been impressive through the early stages of camp thus far.

Packers WR Randall Cobb is hoping to develop into an all-around receiver.

“I don’t want to work on just being a slot receiver,” Cobb said. “I want to be a receiver, period. I want to be able to go outside, too. So one thing I’ve worked on this off-season, too, is my outside routes and trying to put that into my game so I’m not just labeled a ‘slot guy.’”

Not too long ago, Greg Jennings grew into such a a do-it-all receiver. In time, maybe Cobb follows a similar trajectory.

Fantasy Impact: 

The story is mainly about the potential of taking Cobb off special team duties to save him, but it's worth noting he is striving to be a do-it-all receiver. Either way, Cobb is ranked 13th, right behind 12th-ranked teammate Jordy Nelson. In fact, James Jones also cracks our top-25 WRs, coming in at 24th. There are a lot of targets for QB Aaron Rodgers but we predict 83 catches and over 1,000 yards with 9 TDs for Cobb. Cobb's ADP is late-third round while Jordy's is early fifth. Since we predict very similar numbers for the two, it's something to keep in mind on draft day...

Vikings wide receiver Jerome Simpson spent his Monday morning running sprints and catching passes alongside All-Pro receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
In other words, Simpson's 2013 season is off to a promising start.

“I wanted to work with one of the greats,” Simpson said. “I got an opportunity to come down here and work with him so I wanted to take full advantage of it.”

Simpson and Fitzgerald don’t know each other personally. They share a mutual friend and Fitzgerald extended an invitation for Simpson to join workouts that he hosts at the Gophers football facility. Simpson took part for the first time on Monday.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Vikings need someone to step up alongside WR1 Greg Jennings, especially with the loss of Percy Harvin. There were high hopes for Simpson when he finally took the field in 2012 but he never panned out. He ranks just 83rd on our list to start the year.
