Scouting report

OAK QB E.J. Manuel - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Baltimore Ravens

E.J. Manual gets the start with Derek Carr's back injured. He's not on the fantasy radar for Week 5 against a Ravens defense ranked in the top-10 in our aFPA vs. QB rankings. Overall, the Ravens have also allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to QBs this season.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - Week 17, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New York Jets
E.J. Manuel gets his first start of the season this week with Tyrod Taylor out. The good news is he gets to face a Jets team that is in turmoil. The bad news is we haven't seen much from Manuel in his career, and that is probably not going to change this week.

Manuel will put up numbers just because of the quality of the opponent, but not good enough to warrant any fantasy attention. There is no reason to pick him up for one game, as there are many better options.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Jacksonville
Back in the starting lineup for the first time since 2014, E.J. Manuel didn't embarrass himself last week. He did throw for 263 yards and a touchdown (and a pick), however, Buffalo had him throw 42 passes which is probably not what they want. He will get the start again this week.

The Bills head to jolly, old England for a battle with the Jaguars. Jacksonville is 18th in aFPA to quarterbacks, so there is no advantage either way. Manuel is not expected to put up any better numbers than we saw last week, so he is not really a fantasy QB option for Week 7. Keep him on the bench (and waiver wire) since we don't even know how long he will remain the starter.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Bengals
With starter Tyrod Taylor banged up with a knee injury, it appears E.J. Manuel could get the start for the Bills on Sunday. It's not a slam dunk Taylor is out, but Manuel received most of the snaps in practice on Thursday.

It's actually a great opportunity for Manuel, but our optimism is limited. He has not played well in the NFL. His last start was September 28th last season against the Texans.

If Manuel gets the start, he is rated one of the lowest fantasy QB options for Week 6. There is no way he should be in your starting lineup or even your roster.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The good news is E.J. Manuel is still young and the Bills are publicly saying there is a quarterback competition to decide who will be the starter. The potential word is still being thrown around the Buffalo camp. Manuel has shown some positives during his first two seasons, but there might not be enough to keep him relevant in the NFL.

Fantasy Downside
New head coach Rex Ryan did not select Manuel, so it is hard to really get a feel for how Ryan feels about him. When you watch film, you don't see a lot of things that make you say Manuel has a good chance to succeed as a starting quarterback in the league. There are too many mistakes mentally and he has also struggled physically, although he did gain some weight with the intention of it keeping him healthy.

Bottom Line
Manuel might still get a chance with Buffalo, but Matt Cassel will have to either fail miserably or get hurt. Even if he does get another chance, we are confident the results won't be much different. Manuel has very little fantasy value, even if he is the starter Week 1.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4: Manuel vs Texans
E.J. Manuel had his highest passing yardage total of the season last week (238) and did not throw any picks for the second straight week. He has only three touchdowns in three games which is not great from a fantasy standpoint.

Manuel also threw 38 passes which is probably too many for the Bills' liking. That number should go down which means the yardage should go down as well.

Bills will face the Texans whose defense is average. Quarterbacks have had moderate success the first three week. We don't expect much from Manuel except for last week's numbers to do down. Keep him on the bench for Week 4.

BUF QB E.J. Manuel - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Manuel vs. Chargers
We are starting to see what E.J. Manuel is developing into as an NFL quarterback - a game manager. That's good for the Bills because that will help them win. Not great for fantasy owners because Manuel is going to net about 200 yards passing with a high completion percentage and low touchdown total.

Manuel will face a San Diego pass defense that is not great, but that won't help Manuel's rating for Week 3 too much. He does rate a low-end No. 2 which is where he will hang around most of the season. Keep Manuel on the bench.
