Scouting report

PIT RB DeAngelo Williams - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Sometimes a change of scenery can do a talented veteran such as DeAngelo Williams some good. The Carolina Panthers’ all-time leading rusher joins the Steelers as the backup to LeVeon Bell. With Bell suspended – as of this writing – for the first three games of the season, Williams should get plenty of chances to carry the ball early. What role he carves out for himself after that is up to him.

Fantasy Downside
The 32-year-old Williams has logged 1,432 career rushing attempts and, as a backup, he doesn’t have a defined role outside of being the main guy during Bell’s suspension. Last season, the backup to Bell, LeGarrette Blount, logged 10 carries in just two games before being released after Week 12.

Bottom Line
Williams should be a handcuff for Bell owners. And perhaps he’ll be good enough to help you win some games while the star running back is out. Outside of that, however, he doesn’t have a lot of value as long as Bell is on the field. He also managed to play in just six games last season because of injuries after missing just one game the previous three seasons.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Divisional Round – DeAngelo Williams vs. Seattle
DeAngelo Williams had four carries for 16 yards last week against the Cardinals coming off an injury. He should be in the mix again this week, but he’ll still be well behind Jonathan Stewart on the depth chart and I wouldn’t expect him to get many touches. He’ll be vying with Fozzy Whitaker for change of pace work and shouldn’t be active in any fantasy leagues.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Cleveland
DeAngelo Williams has missed time with injuries lately, but he should be good to go against the Browns this week. Still, starter Jonathan Stewart has done a pretty good job with the starting role since Williams has been out, and it’s unlikely that the veteran Williams will come back to a decent workload. You never know in Carolina, but right now it looks like Williams will be more change-of-pace than running back by committee. He should probably remain on waivers.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – DeAngelo Williams vs. New Orleans
DeAngelo Williams got a little banged up last week, so fantasy owners should be sure to monitor his status for Week 14. Even if he does play however, he’s still likely to split time with the slightly younger and slightly more effective Jonathan Stewart, limiting his fantasy value. He had only seven carries for 21 yards last week, and I would expect his touches to be less than a dozen even if he’s active. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere.

Update:

Williams was declared out, so be sure to get him out of your lineup and give Jonathan Stewart a little extra boost.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Minnesota

DeAngelo Williams had 41 yards on 10 carries against the Falcons in Week 11, showing that he’s right back in the middle of a time share with Jonathan Stewart now that both backs are healthy. Things will likely get even more complicated with the return of Mike Tolbert from injury. As long as all three backs are healthy, none of them are going to have a ton of fantasy upside, although the guaranteed 6-12 touches a game gives Williams some moderate value in large leagues.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Atlanta
DeAngelo Williams had 48 total yards last week on 13 carries and three receptions. Williams continues to split touches with Jonathan Stewart, limiting his fantasy value, and Stewart has been the more productive back with the carries he’s gotten. Williams should do better this week against the sieve that is the Falcons run defense, but he’s still a low-end RB3 option due to the limited touches he’s likely to get.

CAR RB DeAngelo Williams - Week 10, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 – DeAngelo Williams vs. Philadelphia

DeAngelo Williams returned from injury last week against the Saints and had eight carries for 20 yards. He added a 30 yard reception to his totals too, slightly salvaging a disappointing night for the entire Carolina offense.

Williams will remain in a time share with Jonathan Stewart for as long as both players are healthy, severely limiting the value of both players. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere if possible, as 8-12 touches and 40-60 yards is probably the most you can expect from either guy.
