Chargers RB Darren Sproles (concussion) missed practice again Thursday. The Chargers were hopeful that Sproles could play this week, but the fact that he hasn't returned to practice doesn't look good. Ryan Mathews and Jacob Hester could be more involved if Sproles is out.

Chargers Notes: It will still likely be a late-in-the-week decision on tight end Antonio Gates (foot), and it appears wide receiver Legedu Naanee’s hamstring could keep him out against the Chiefs. The Chargers hope to know more about receiver Vincent Jackson (calf) after they see how he runs and recovers Monday.

Turner said running back Darren Sproles had a headache Monday after suffering a concussion against the Raiders but that “he felt pretty good” and there is optimism Sproles will be cleared to play against the Chiefs.

Turner did not rule out the team getting back receiver Patrick Crayton (wrist) for their game Dec. 16 against the San Francisco 49ers but their timetable is more realistically Dec. 26 at Cincinnati.

Running back Darren Sproles left Sunday’s game in the second quarter after suffering a concussion on a helmet-to-helmet hit by Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain after a catch over the middle. There was no penalty called and, by rule, none should have been.

“You can’t hit helmet-to-helmet on a defenseless player,” referee John Parry said after the game. “He was not considered defenseless. He was considered a runner because the act of possession was complete, the minimum three steps were taken, so he was now deemed to be a runner.”

Turner said Sproles appeared to be OK after the game.

Having only seen the play live, Turner agreed with the call but did express some of the same confusion over the interpretation of what has been the league’s hot-button issue this year.

“He didn’t appear to be defenseless,” Turner said. “Now, the helmet-to-helmet, I don’t think anyone knows anymore what is or isn’t.”
