KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Clyde Edwards-Helaire had a bizarre game last week as he ran seven times for no yards. Thankfully for fantasy owners he managed to find the end zone, and in PPR formats he turned in a 5-39 performance on five targets. CEH has been RB4 in half-PPR formats through three games, although his usage doesn't necessarily scream top five running back. CEH has played below 50% of the offensive snaps in every game, and he's only averaging 11.3 touches. It feels like he's eventually going to crash, and it could be this week in a brutal matchup vs. the Bucs. Tampa Bay has allowed the fewest average fantasy points to running backs this season, mostly because they haven't given up a single touchdown to the position. Which is bad news for CEH considering a lot of his fantasy value has been tied to him finding the end zone. It's a tough matchup, but CEH has been pretty productive so far. He should still be viewed as a low-end RB2 heading into Week 4.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Indianapolis Colts

Clyde Edwards-Helaire has so far been a draft day steal. He's been the RB5 (half-PPR) through two weeks despite his ADP being around RB25. It's been nice so far, but the question is if it will last. CEH has played below 50% of the offensive snaps in each game (39% and 44%) while averaging just 11 touches. Jerick McKinnon has actually played two more snaps than CEH, although he's been much less productive. We'll see if CEH can keep this efficiency up. He gets a somewhat tough matchup against the Colts in Week 3. He should be viewed as a solid RB2 play this week.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Fantasy managers who gambled on Clyde Edwards-Helaire are feeling good after Week 1. CEH ran seven times for 42 yards while going 3-32-2 on three targets. He only played on 39% of the offensive snaps, but part of that is because of the score. Although backup Jerick McKinnon had a decent role in the game with seven touches and 49 scrimmage yards. Isiah Pacheco led the backfield with 12 carries, but most of those came late in the game. Overall, CEH had value touches early on in the game and was highly efficient with them. He gets an OK matchup in Week 2 against the Chargers where he should be viewed as a low-end RB2 play.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Arizona Cardinals

Clyde Edwards-Helaire has fallen out of favor for a variety of reasons. The top reason being a lack of production. He was 27th in points per game (10.8 half-PPR) last year and was 23rd the year before. We thought free agent signing Ronald Jones would battle CEH for touches this season, but rookie Isiah Pacheco has emerged as that threat instead. Not to mention Jerick McKinnon is there as well. On top of all that, CEH will draw a tough Week 1 matchup vs. the Cardinals who allowed the fourth-fewest average fantasy points to running backs last year. CEH should be viewed as a low-end RB2 or a flex play to begin the season.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the Chiefs’ bell-cow back last season before getting injured in Week 5. But in the first four weeks, he averaged over 16 touches per game while averaging nearly 90 scrimmage yards. He continued to have a sizable role, seeing at least 10 touches in every game since returning from injury. He did split touches with Darrel Williams, but he’s gone now, which brings up a role for CEH heading into 2022. Yes the Chiefs added Ronald Jones, but Jones has never been a receiving threat. With Williams out of the picture, there’s a strong chance we see CEH emerge more in the passing game. Even Tyreek Hill’s departure can open the door for more targets on shorter routes. CEH is a 23-year-old former first-round pick in one of the best offenses in the league, so there are reasons to be optimistic about him headed into 2022.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Edwards-Helaire hasn’t had the best start to his career in terms of production. We thought he’d be the next productive back in Andy Reid’s offense after being a first-round draft pick, but instead he’s finished as RB27 and RB23 the past two years (average, half-PPR). He split a lot of touches with Darrel Williams last season, especially in the red zone. Williams had 10 red zone targets to CEH’s 3, 28 red zone carries to CEH’s 12 and 14 carries inside the 5-yard line to CEH’s 2. The addition of Jones shows the Chiefs will likely still have a committee backfield.

2022 Bottom Line
There are a lot of red flags when it comes to CEH this season, but it also shows in his ADP. You’d think a young starting running back on one of the top offenses would be an early-round selection, but instead he’s being drafted as RB26, which is a fair landing spot. Some could even see some potential value if CEH’s role in the passing game is improved. He averaged just 2.3 targets per game compared to Williams who averaged 4.8 targets in his seven starts. That opens up some additional targets, and we know Jones isn’t a receiving threat. There are reasons to like CEH this season, but his past production is hard to ignore.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Clyde Edwards-Helaire didn't do much last week, rushing nine times for 32 yards and catching 2-of-4 targets for 18 yards. He didn't score a touchdown, but he did convert on a two-point conversion. The touches weren't there, but the good news is CEH played on 71% of the offensive snaps, his highest mark since Week 1 and 20% more than he's played in a game since returning from injury. He has a chance to be much more productive this week as things are trending in his direction. CEH faces a favorable Steelers defense that's given up the eighth-most average fantasy points to running backs. And Kansas City may end up relying on the run game more this week if Tyreek Hill (COVID) and Travis Kelce (COVID) are unable to play. CEH should be viewed as a strong RB2 play in Week 16.

KC RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Los Angeles Chargers

Clyde Edwards-Helaire did a lot with very little last week. The Chiefs running back ran 10 times for 37 yards while catching three passes for five yards. But he managed to score twice on the ground, giving fantasy owners a solid performance. CEH only played on 35% of the offensive snaps (his lowest in a non-injury game this season) as the Chiefs played in a blowout. We'd expect CEH to get more snaps this week in what should be a good game against the Chargers. CEH played really well against the Chargers earlier in the year (Week 3), rushing 17 times for 100 yards while finishing 2-9-1 as a receiver. CEH should finish around 15 touches, which in a favorable matchup would make him a strong RB2 play in Week 15.
