Scouting report

PHI TE Brent Celek - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 - Celek vs. San Francisco
With a host of injuries on the offensive line, Brent Celek's duty will likely be blocking - at least this week until the return of RT Lane Johnson in Week 5. Celek played on 63% of the snaps but only drew four targets and didn't record a catch. He's just not a safe play right now.

PHI TE Brent Celek - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 - Celek vs. Washington
Celek was targeted one time last week and didn't record a catch. He dropped a ball that would have been a TD. Celek isn't seeing a lot of action in terms of offense, likely due to the team being banged up on the O-line. Celek is a very good blocker and the team has been using three-TE sets at times. Celek isn't an advisable fantasy play.

PHI TE Brent Celek - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Colts
Zach Ertz had a big game in Week 1, making a very nice TD catch and finishing with three catches for 77 yards on five targets.

He's going to be a big part of the offense, as the team tries to find ways to make up for the loss of DeSean Jackson. It's a tough matchup for Ertz this week as the Colts rank fourth in allowing fantasy points to TEs. As a result, he's once again a low-end TE1 coming in ninth. Nevertheless, he's still probably a guy to go with unless you have a much better option.

PHI TE Brent Celek - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Jaguars
Brent Celek is probably going to be passed by Zach Ertz in production this year, but I still think Celek is still going to be a key part of the offense. The problem is I don't think he'll be a consistent, fantasy point producer and that will make him a tough play any week. He'll have a chance to make your lineup in leagues that require multiple TEs, but even in a good matchup against the Jags, you probably want to try and get an idea of how this plays out before inserting him.

PHI TE Celek Brent - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Brent Celek is as tough as they come in the NFL. He's put together some very good seasons in the league and is a legit red zone target and good hands and just overall smart. Celek can pretty much do it all at the position which of course keeps him on the field, and in an offense like the Eagles which run a lot of plays, that's obviously a good thing.

Fantasy Downside
The presence of Zach Ertz eventually limited Celek last year although the Eagles never really featured either TE. This year, Ertz is supposed to take that next step and pass Celek on the depth chart, thus earning more time and targets. The Eagles are supposed to feature Ertz and the TE position more this year but we heard that just about every week last year and it just never happened.

Bottom Line
I'm not convinced Celek won't have a role in the offense. If anything, he's going to limit Ertz this season who is ranked higher and expected to emerge as the TE1. Celek probably won't see a lot of draft day action and outside deeper leagues with multiple TEs, he probably shouldn't. He's a guy to keep an eye on in deeper leagues, though. He should have some decent games, however the problem will be trying to predict when they are.
