It didn't take long for Steelers S Troy Polamalu to look like the player he was last season before he injured his Achilles tendon.

In his first appearance since the Super Bowl, Polamalu looked like the 2010 NFL defensive player of the year with a number of dazzling plays in the first half of a 24-14 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The highlight was an interception of a tipped Michael Vick pass in which Polamalu weaved his way for a 36-yard return, holding the ball one-handed and looking as if he wanted to lateral before eventually being tackled low by Vick.

Polamalu made his presence known on several other occasions.

He nearly had another interception on a pass intended for wide receiver Jason Avant, but the ball was tipped by linebacker Lawrence Timmons as Polamalu closed on the receiver. One play earlier, Polamalu came flying to the line of scrimmage and took out pulling guard Todd Herremans, allowing linebacker LaMarr Woodley to stop running back LeSean McCoy (from Pitt) after a 2-yard gain.

In the second quarter, Polamalu made a diving breakup of a pass for tight end Brent Celek.

Eagles QB Michael Vick is making it a point to get Brent Celek the ball more this season.

“I think this season is going to be a great year for Brent,” Vick said. “We’ve been connecting a lot over the last couple of weeks. I just told him he needs to trust me and I’m going to get the ball to him. Just get open and I’ll find you.”

“The majority of the time last year, he was wide open,” Vick said. “I just failed to get the ball to him – just focusing in on DeSean and Jeremy. I went back on some of my Atlanta film and how I used Alge [Crumpler]. We’re going to get Brent involved this year – I think he deserves that.”

Fantasy Impact: 

Celek caught a three-yard TD in the Eagles first preseason game and closed the 2010 season with 12 receptions for 169 yards and a TD in his final two games. His upside depends on how often Vick looks his way, and with Jeremy Maclin still sidelined, Celek should get plenty of targets early on.

Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin has returned to St. Louis to undergo further testing for his mysterious illness.

He hasn't practiced and is reportedly quite thin. It's no sure bet that he'll be ready to go for Week 1.

Fantasy Impact: 

At this point, it's time to downgrade Maclin even further. The doctors seem stumped, which indicates that there is no likely end date to this ordeal. From a fantasy perspective, Jason Avant and the newly signed Steve Smith get a bump. Also, Brent Celek could see more targets over the middle, solidifying his sleeper status at TE.

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick led Eagles teammates in a workout Thursday for the first time since the lockout started 65 days ago in a remote location in South Jersey, according to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio. Working out with Vick were Brent Celek, Jason Avant, Jeremy Maclin and others; about 15 Eagle players were expected to attend.
