STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7: Cunningham vs. Seahawks
Benny Cunningham rushed for 21 yards on seven carries while also adding two catches for 12 yards in the Rams' Week 6 loss to the 49ers. We get a lot of questions about the Rams' backfield situation but it's anyone's guess to how the team will utilize Cunningham, Zac Stacy and Tre Mason moving forward. Quite frankly, the coaching staff may not even know. The Rams insist that they'll go with the hot hand but two weeks ago Trey Watts received the first carry of the game and was inactive for Monday night's game against the Niners. It's safe to assume that Stacy is no longer a viable RB2 and that Cunningham isn't going to see enough touches to be a fantasy starter. If Mason is still available on your waiver wire, he has the most upside of any St. Louis back, but there's no guarantee that the team will use him more than they did on Monday night. For now, avoid the Rams' backfield situation if you can. Cunningham ranks as our No. 40 overall RB for Week 7.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6: Cunningham vs. 49ers
Benny Cunningham rushed seven times for 47 yards and a touchdown while also adding three receptions on five targets for 24 yards. Cunningham doesn't hold a ton of fantasy value but he would get a bump if Zac Stacy (calf) couldn't play on Monday night. While the matchup with San Francisco is bad, he does make for a good backup plan for Stacy owners. He ranks as our No. 42 overall RB for Week 6 but his stock will rise if Stacy doesn't practice over the weekend. Monitor Stacy's status leading up to Monday night's game.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5: Cunningham vs. Eagles
Benny Cunningham rushed nine times for 29 yards and added one catch for five yards in the Rams' Week 3 loss to the Cowboys. While he took carries away from Zac Stacy in the first two weeks, Cunningham looks to be the team's RB2 once again. If you have roster space, stash him as Stacy's handcuff because he would be the starter if Stacy were to get hurt. But Cunningham is our No. 51 overall RB for Week 5 and isn't a fantasy option at the present moment.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Cunningham vs. Cowboys
Benny Cunningham rushed six times for 15 yards in the Rams' Week 2 win over the Buccaneers. One week after he split carries in warm ups ahead of the Vikings game, Cunningham was clearly the team's RB2 last Sunday. Zac Stacy remains the lead back in the team's two-back committee, although Cunningham should see a bump in touches this Sunday with Tavon Austin out with a knee injury. Still, he ranks as our No. 44 overall RB for Week 3 and should remain on your bench or waiver wire.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Cunningham vs. Bucs
Benny Cunningham rushed for 21 yards on five carries in the Rams' 34-6 loss to the Vikings in Week 1. He split carries with Zac Stacy in warm ups and then went on to receive plenty of third-down work in the first half. All told, Stacy out-touched Cunningham 12-9 but it's clear that Cunningham will continue to eat into Stacy's workload. Given their shaky quarterback situation, the Rams are hoping that they can run the ball close to 30 times per game and control the clock in efforts to wear opponents down. But the Vikings dared the Rams to throw the ball last week by using plenty of 8-man fronts and St. Louis couldn't take advantage. As of right now Cunningham isn't a fantasy starter. But if you're a Stacy owner and Cunningham is still on your waiver wire, he's worth a roster stash. He's our No. 50 RB for Week 2.

STL RB Cunningham Benny - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Cunningham vs. Vikings
Zac Stacy remains the starter in St. Louis but following a solid preseason, Benny Cunningham is the Rams' No. 2 back. While he'll be limited in fantasy unless Stacy goes down, Cunningham makes for a better handcuff than rookie Tre Mason (who is still learning how to pass protect). If you're a Stacy owner, you should stash Cunningham on your roster if he's still available. Stacy is a physical back and suffered some minor injuries a year ago, so keep Cunningham (No. 55 RB for Week 1) around as insurance.

STL RB Cunningham Benny - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Even though rookie Tre Mason is being drafted a full round higher than Cunningham in both standard and PPR formats, it's Cunningham that offers more value heading into the regular season. Things could change in a hurry, especially when considering that Cunningham was an undrafted free agent in 2013 and Mason was the team's third-round pick this past May. But right now it's Cunningham that is coming off the bench when Zac Stacy needs a breather, while Mason has been relegated to third-string duties. Through two weeks of the preseason, Cunningham has done nothing to deserves a demotion as the Rams' No. 2 back. If Stacy were to fall victim to injury early in the season, Cunningham would ostensibly take first-team reps. He's the better handcuff for Stacy at this present time.

Fantasy Downside
We alluded to this in the "Fantasy Upside" section but it bares repeating: Cunningham is currently running with the twos but things could change quickly. The Rams didn't draft Mason with the 75th overall pick so that he could ride the bench for most of the year. He offers more long-term upside than Cunningham and is the more dangerous option in the passing game, even though Cunningham has shown plenty of burst in open space.

Bottom Line
Unless Stacy suffers an injury, Cunningham will remain the No. 2 back until Mason shows enough potential to deserve a promotion. Even though Mason is the more touted back, Cunningham is the better handcuff for Stacy owners heading into the season. Just understand that Mason was drafted to eventually provide the lightning to Stacy's thunder and the coaching staff may want to see more of the rookie as the season wears on. The good news is that the Rams are a run-first team and will likely get all three backs - Stacy, Cunningham and Mason - involved on a weekly basis. The frustrating part for fantasy owners is that the dynamic behind Stacy could change throughout the season depending on who has the hot hand. But Cunningham has some value, especially now that Sam Bradford is out for the season and the team will be forced to lean even heavier on their running game.
