In the preseason opener Friday at Kansas City, Dezmon Briscoe led the Bucs with four catches for 60 yards, all in the first half.

Not that anybody in Tampa Bay was surprised. Activated for the final two games last season after No. 2 receiver Arrelious Benn went on injured reserve with a torn ACL, Briscoe, 21, stepped in and stood out. He caught six passes for 93 yards, four of them for first downs. He got deep, hauling in a 54-yarder in the season finale at New Orleans. He also demonstrated great body control, catching a 2-yard fade over Saints cornerback Jabari Greer for a touchdown by dragging both feet in the back of the end zone.

With Benn making a slow recovery from knee surgery, Briscoe has taken control of the starting job opposite Mike Williams. "I had to wait until my opportunity came and make sure I seize it," Briscoe said.

Fantasy Impact:

Benn was (and still may be) shaping up as a sleeper, but Briscoe is making the most of his opportunity and may be difficult to usurp as the Bucs' WR2.

Arrelious Benn is way ahead of his rehab schedule but, once again, behind the curve in training camp. He was held out of the preseason opener at Kansas City on Friday and will not play against the Patriots on Thursday. His 2011 debut is tentatively planned for the Dolphins game next week.

"You've got to hold him back because you can get fooled and think he's been out 12, 16 months, and it's only been six or seven," said receivers coach Eric Yarber. "We're trying to hold him back, and he's been good about it."

Meanwhile, Dezmon Briscoe has been the talk of camp. He raised eyebrows after coming off the practice squad at the end of last season and was impressive against the Chiefs.

Benn has been cleared to run full speed and is making cuts and turns as if his knee had never seen a scalpel. His muscles are a little sore, and he's still working himself into shape. The expectation is that he will be cleared for contact early next week.

Fantasy Impact:

Benn continues to fly under the radar even though he's still expected to start opposite Mike Williams by Week 1. He's worth a flier in the final rounds of deeper leagues.

“I’m past where I should be. I’m where I want to be. I can’t be any better than where I am now. I definitely envision me being full strength and full tilt for training camp. I’m able to cut a little bit and get out there and run a little bit. I want to take it easy. It’s still early. I feel good, but things in my knee still need to heal. I don’t want to come out here and be stupid or do anything that will jeopardize my season.”
