Week 4 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Jeff Wilson had just 15 yards on 12 rushes against the Giants last week, but he scored a touchdown on the ground and another in passing game, as he added three catches and 54 yards to his totals. Wilson may be the last man standing in the 49ers rushing attack, or he may find himself back to third on the depth chart depending on the status of Raheem Mostert and Jerick McKinnon. If both are out, Wilson becomes a sneaky borderline RB2 with the potential for a full workload – not to mention his traditional goal line carries. If only one is out, then Wilson still has some deep league and touchdown-only league value, as he’s a notorious touchdown vulture.
Week 3 at New York Giants
Jeff Wilson has vultured touchdowns in the past and bounced up and down the depth chart for the 49ers, but he never seems to completely go away. He looks like he’s on target to disrupt the Jerick McKinnon party this week, but he’s more likely to hurt McKinnon than to be a great option in his own right. That being said, he has some upside in deeper leagues if the 49ers can play ball control against a terrible Giants team. It’s possible both backs feed, and we know Wilson has some goal line chops. He’s a low-end RB3 option in deep leagues.
Week 12 vs. Green Bay Packers
Jeff “The Vulture” Wilson showed he can vulture through the air as well last week against the Cardinals, scoring on a 25-yard reception. It was his only touch of the game, however, making it hard to trust him in your fantasy lineup. While he’s managed five touchdowns this year off of only 27 total touches, expecting a score in any given week is dangerous. If Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert both miss this week’s contest against the Packers, then Wilson has some upside against the 23rd ranked defense in aFPA to opposing running backs, but that seems a lot to ask for. He should remain on waivers in most leagues.
Week 10 vs. Seattle Seahawks
Jeff “The Vulture” Wilson stole four touchdowns over his first two games of the season, but he’s been largely inactive since. With Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman both expected to be active once again this week, there’s no reason to expect Wilson to get work. He may vulture a score again, but that’s super risky to count on and he should remain on waivers in all leagues.
Week 9 at Arizona Cardinals
Jeff “The Vulture” Wilson robbed Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert of four touchdowns earlier this season, but he’s been pretty quiet since the return of Tevin Coleman. He got a little nicked up on Sunday against the Panthers, but it sounds like he’s going to be ready to go Thursday night. If Breida and Mostert are both out for Thursday night’s game, then Wilson has some deep-league upside in a great matchup against the Cardinals as a complementary back to starter Tevin Coleman. However, if either Breida or Mostert are active, it’s too risky to count on Wilson vulturing another touchdown.
Week 5 vs. Cleveland Browns
Jeff “The Vulture” Wilson has 18 carries and four touchdowns over his past two games. He’s averaging a mere 2.9 yards per carry, but has been used extensively as the short-yardage back. This hardly seems sustainable, but in touchdown-only leagues, Wilson clearly is worth a gamble if this continues. Fantasy owners in this league-type should still be cautious starting him, but if he keeps getting short-yardage work even when Tevin Coleman returns, then it might make him valuable in that very specific league type. Otherwise, the touchdown production doesn’t seem consistent enough to overcome the lack of production elsewhere in most leagues, and he should stay on waivers.
Week 17 at Los Angeles Rams
With Matt Breida set to miss the final game of the season, Jeff Wilson could be in for a full workload and a good fantasy outing. He’s shown the ability to contribute in the passing game in limited opportunities this season, and he’s averaging 4.1 yards per carry on 63 attempts this season.
The Rams have been a little above-average against opposing running backs this season, but if Wilson gets 20 or more touches, he should be considered a solid RB2 option in all league formats. The 49ers don’t have a lot on offense outside of tight end George Kittle, and Wilson should benefit from the absence of Breida.
Week 16 vs. Chicago Bears
With Matt Breida active last week, Jeff Wilson took a complementary role against the Seahawks, carrying the ball only seven times for 46 yards. He also had a fumble. Wilson’s value moving forward is directly tied to Breida’s status. Breida is still dealing with a banged up ankle, so watch his status this week to determine the viability of Wilson against the Bears.
Should Breida play, Wilson shouldn’t be trusted. If Breida is out, however, Wilson should be in line for a full workload. If that happens, he’s a borderline RB2 against the Bears, who have allowed only five rushing touchdowns all season. Only the Ravens and Titans have allowed fewer fantasy points to opposing running backs. If Breida is out, Wilson is worth considering in a tough matchup, but fantasy owners should probably steer clear of the San Francisco running game if possible.
Week 15 vs. Seattle Seahawks
Jeff Wilson had 90 yards on 23 carries last week against the Broncos as he retained the starting running back role with Matt Breida injured. The 49ers aren’t playing for anything right now, so expect Wilson to continue to get a full workload as they evaluate talent for next season.
This week, Wilson faces a Seahawks defense that has been a little below average against the run this year, ranking 19th in the league in fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs. Wilson’s workload should be large enough to make him a nice RB2 option in all league formats, particularly if Breida is inactive, as is possible. If Breida returns, Wilson is still worth considering, but more as an RB3 option.
Week 14 vs. Denver Broncos
Jeff Wilson filled in for Matt Breida last week and put up 134 total yards from scrimmage on 23 touches. His 61 yards on 15 carries weren’t very impressive, but eight catches for 73 yards made him the second-most productive player in the 49ers passing game behind rookie Dante Pettis.
With Breida set to miss this week’s tilt against the Broncos, Wilson could be in for a full workload. The Broncos are above average against the run this year, giving up 24.4 total PPR fantasy points per game to the position, so it won’t be easy for Wilson to have repeated success. However, with a full workload and an active role in the passing game, Wilson should be considered a solid RB2 option this week, with high upside as a starter.
