SD RB Danny Woodhead - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Arizona
After getting two touches Week 1 last year, Danny Woodhead got about 9-18 touches the rest of the way, finishing with 76 catches and six receiving TDs as the team's main threat out of the backfield catching the ball.

Woodhead should also see some chances rushing the ball but this week will be a tough go against Arizona on the road. The Cards were last year's top team in allowing fantasy points to RBs. Woodhead ranks 36th among RBs in standard formats and has a little more value in PPR, but this could be a week to keep him on your bench outside of deeper leagues.

SD RB Danny Woodhead - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
HC Mike McCoy suggested in March that he plans to use a hot-hand approach with his running backs in 2014 following the addition of Donald Brown joining Ryan Mathews and Woodhead. McCoy said his background after working for John Fox in Carolina is using multiple running backs. "You get in there, you get on a little bit of a roll and you're going to stay in there," McCoy told CBSSports.com. While Mathews is locked in as the starter and lead back, Brown appears to be heading for the backup to Mathews leaving Woodhead to reprise the same change-of-pace role he handled (quite well) last season. One reason for that, Woodhead is often the defensive responsibility of linebackers who simply can't catch him, owing to the kind of speed and agility that would have made Woodhead one of the best all-around athletes at the 2006 NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Downside
The emergence of Keenan Allen and Ladarius Green as playmakers in the passing game could be an issue.

Bottom Line
Those of you in PPR leagues who are worried about Brown's possible impact should watch developments in camp closely; but we expect Woodhead to continue putting up solid fantasy totals in that format.
