BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Buffalo Bills

Rashod Bateman had a fumble – or incomplete pass if you ask me – and ended the day with 59 yards on just two receptions last week against the Patriots. That said, he still was second on the team with four targets and his role in the offense isn’t at risk. He’s the second option in the passing game behind elite tight end Mark Andrews, and that’s likely to continue.

This week, Bateman has a chance to bounce back against the Bills and their beat up secondary. Still, with volume a question for him, it’s risky to bank highly on him. We have him as a high-end WR3 or flex option this week.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at New England Patriots

Rashod Bateman has only caught six balls through two games, but he’s made the most of those receptions, with touchdowns of 75 and 55 yards already. He leads the team with 167 receiving yards and is second on the team with 12 targets, so the reception volume should come.

This week, Bateman faces a Patriots defense that held Diontae Johnson to 57 yards on six receptions last week and contained Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle as best you can – 12 combined catches, 163 yards, one touchdown – in Week 1. It’s a tough matchup, so we have him ranked as a low-end WR2 option. He has upside and should be active, but temper expectations against this defense.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Miami Dolphins

Rashod Bateman had only two catches last week against the Jets, but he was second on the team with five targets and had 59 yards, including a long, 55-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Obviously, you’d like to see more targets from Bateman, given his draft status, but it was good to see him find the end zone after scoring just once all last season.

This week, Bateman faces a Dolphins defense that held the Patriots to just 213 yards passing last week, despite being ahead for nearly the entire game. They have a tough secondary and Bateman could be blanketed by pick-off artist Xavien Howard. Consider him a low-end WR2 with upside this week.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New York Jets

Rashod Bateman was third on the team in receptions with 46, despite missing five games with injury and being eased into the offense with only four starts. He should slide into the WR1 role on the team with Marquise Brown traded to the Cardinals. That leaves 146 vacated targets, and the Ravens really didn’t add anyone to compete with Bateman for the bulk of those. Bateman was highly touted as a first-round pick last year and looks poised for a breakout season in 2022.

The Ravens start the season off with a nice matchup against the Jets. Bateman will face a defense that ranked 22nd in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last season and he should get off to a nice start in his flashy new WR1 role on the team. The only thing that can stop the Baltimore passing attack in Week 1 is a blowout victory, where they may stop throwing the ball. We have Bateman ranked as a solid WR2 option this week. You drafted him as a starter, so start him.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Rashod Bateman returned from injury in last year’s rookie campaign to average 42.9 yards on 3.8 receptions over 12 games. He was targeted 5.7 times per contest but only scored one touchdown all season for an up-and-down offense that was riddled with injuries. This year, with Marquise Brown now in Arizona and a clear path to WR1 targets, all the pieces are in place for a breakout season from Bateman. Selected in the first round, Bateman flashes all the skills and attributes you look for in an elite wide receiver. Matt Harmon said “he gets effortless separation” in this year’s profile at Reception Perception, and added “the methodology continues to point to a future mega breakout in Bateman’s future.” The opportunity and talent are both there.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The biggest downside to Bateman is the Ravens’ offense. Baltimore has been the league-leader in rushing attempts since quarterback Lamar Jackson arrived and much of the passing volume is geared toward tight end Mark Andrews, coming off a career year. With a foreseeably healthy running back room this year, there may not be enough volume in the passing game to support a fantasy WR1.

2022 Bottom Line
Bateman is risky going in the middle rounds of drafts, but the upside is there for him to have an excellent year. The Ravens were actually ninth in passing attempts last season – albeit with fewer wins and massive injuries throughout the offense – so there may be just enough shift in philosophy to give Bateman the targets he needs. Mostly, the absence of Brown opens up 139 targets from last year, and even if Bateman repeats Brown’s numbers, he’ll be a solid WR2. He’s worth the risk at his ADP and should be a target for fantasy managers.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Rashod Bateman had four catches for 26 yards and scored his first career touchdown last week against the Bengals. While it’s good to see him find the end zone, he and the Baltimore passing game in general – outside of Mark Andrews – has been too inconsistent to trust in the fantasy championship game. Sit him.

BAL WR Rashod Bateman - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Cincinnati Bengals

Rashod Bateman has been all over the place the last few weeks. He followed up his first career 100-yard receiving game in Week 14 with just one catch for five yards on two targets against the Packers. Until there’s some consistency in his game and in the Ravens’ passing offense in general, Bateman should remain on fantasy benches, despite a nice matchup against the Bengals.
