Scouting report

LAR WR Tutu Atwell - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Tutu Atwell is coming off of career-highs in receptions and receiving yards. Week 1 was kind to the receiving corps in Los Angeles despite Cooper Kupp's absence.

This is not an easy matchup here in Week 2, though. The 49ers shut down the Steelers' offense with relative ease to kickoff the year. We currently have him projected as WR46 with 3.2 catches and 41.4 receiving yards. That puts him near the flex conversation, but ideally, you'd have better options on your roster.

LAR WR Tutu Atwell - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

With multiple injuries to the receiving core, Tutu Atwell has slid into a much bigger role for the Rams down the stretch. In Week 16, Atwell didn’t provide much in the stat sheet only securing 2-14 on two targets. However, Atwell ran the second-most routes on the team just three behind Van Jefferson. Atwell led the team in slot routes with 16 which offers him a nice balance of utilization on the inside and out. Atwell’s 2022 performance could help him push current WR3 Jefferson for snaps next season.

In Week 17, Atwell will have another tough test vs. a solid Chargers secondary. This season notable interior WRs Hunter Renfrow (3-21), Jerry Jeudy (3-54), Tyler Lockett (7-54), and Parris Campbell (2-19) underperformed vs. the Chargers. Overall, it is nice to see Atwell taking the next step in his development as he could emerge as the WR3 long-term for the Rams. However, with Baker Mayfield spreading the ball around and another tough matchup in Week 17, it is best to fade Atwell this week.

LAR WR Tutu Atwell - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Denver Broncos

The loss of Ben Skowronek should push Tutu Atwell up the depth chart. Last week Atwell saw the second most routes on the team running two less than leading receiver Van Jefferson. This increase in usage led to him seeing four targets turning them into one reception for 10 yards. The four targets were only one behind Tyler Higbee for the most on the team. More importantly, Atwell has paced the team in targets since new quarterback Baker Mayfield has become the starter. Atwell is a player worth watching as he should see a solid role in this offense rest of the season as he paced the team in slot routes again in Week 15. The good news for Atwell’s long-term outlook is that the Rams are giving him more opportunities with all the injuries to the wide receiver core. This could lead to better games in softer matchups. However, with the offense struggling and playing a stingy Broncos defense in Week 16, it’s best to take a wait-and-see approach before plugging him in in DFS and season-long leagues.

LAR WR Tutu Atwell - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Green Bay Packers

Some could argue that Tutu Atwell’s Week 14 performance could be the breakthrough game of his young career. Last week Atwell set career highs in snap percentage (61%), targets (9), and receptions (5). Reports coming out of Los Angeles say that Atwell is now doing more behind the scenes to improve as a player. Now with that work showing on the field, it looks like the Rams will give Atwell a former second-round pick every chance to earn a role rest of the season and beyond. Atwell profiles best as an interior wide receiver which is mostly manned by Cooper Kupp, but his 4.4 speed could help land him on the field more in 2023. The good news for Atwell is he should be able to man slot role the rest of the year, which is an extremely valuable role in this offense. Like the rest of the Rams players, it is best to take a wait-and-see approach, but if Atwell builds off his strong game in Week 15, he could be a sneaky DFS play the rest of the year in PPR formats.
