Scouting report

DAL QB Matt Cassel - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs Seattle

The good thing for Matt Cassel is Brandon Weeden is his backup, so the Cowboys will probably stick with him until Tony Romo returns. Cassel wasn't very good last week, as the three INTs stood out and the Dallas offense continued to struggle.

It won't get any easier this week as the Cowboys play Seattle, who has been very good against opposing quarterbacks (5th in a FPA). There is no reason to even think about playing Cassel. He is the worst fantasy quarterback for Week 8.

DAL QB Matt Cassel - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs New York Giants

The Cowboys had enough of Brandon Weeden and will have 33-year old Matt Cassel behind center on Sunday. Let's face it. There is not much more hope with Cassel in the lineup, especially with WR Dez Bryant still sidelined.

Cassel has had some big games as a starter in his career with New England and Kansas City, but he's had a lot of stinkers, too. He does have a decent matchup against New York who is 23rd in aFPA to quarterbacks. However, don't get sucked into the 'star' mystique. Cassel should be nowhere near your starting lineup. In fact, he is rated as the worst fantasy quarterback in the NFL for Week 7.

BUF QB Matt Cassel - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Matt Cassel is a veteran who has had some mild success during his NFL career. Part of the problem is the last year he was even close to being an effective NFL starter was 2010 with Kansas City. But the Bills will likely want a game manager and Cassel can be that. He had nine starts the last two seasons with Minnesota and actually managed to complete 59.6% of his passes. But that might be the best thing we can say about him from a statistical standpoint.

Fantasy Downside
Cassel threw 14 touchdowns in 9 starts over the past two seasons with the Vikings. He accompanied that with 13 interceptions and really looked bad most of the time. Really, Cassel is an NFL backup so the fact the Bills are considering him a starter shows how desperate they are. In other words, Cassel's numbers aren't going to magically get better. In fact, they might get worse.

Bottom Line
Most likely, the Bills quarterback for 2015 will not be a strong fantasy option. Obviously, Buffalo brought in a veteran like Matt Cassel because of their doubt in E.J. Manuel. The Bills aren't publicly dismissing Manuel, but Cassel will have the inside track for the job. No matter who it is, it will be one of the lowest rated starting fantasy quarterbacks in 2015. Unless you have a league where you need three or four quarterbacks on the roster, no reason to have Cassel on your team.

MIN QB Matt Cassel - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Cassel - Week 3 vs. New Orleans

Matt Cassel is coming off of a horrible performance against the New England Patriots. We knew the Patriots had a tough secondary and they showed why in Week 2. Cassel barely completed over half of his passes and ended up throwing four interceptions to just one touchdown. He finished with 202 passing yards.

The statistics say the Saints have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing quarterbacks this season, but that's because Matt Ryan tore them apart in Week 1. In Week 2 they allowed just 204 yards and one touchdown on 40 pass attempts to Brian Hoyer.

Cassel hasn't shown us anything promising this season and that's why he's a very poor option at QB this week. Look elsewhere for your quarterback.

MIN QB Matt Cassel - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Cassel - Week 2 vs. New England

The Minnesota Vikings didn't do a lot of throwing the football in Week 1 against the Rams. Matt Cassel only attempted 25 passes completing 17 of them for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

The Vikings didn't need to pass the ball because they had such a comfortable lead over St. Louis. The Rams had to resort to their backup quarterback Austin Davis who didn't lead the team to any touchdown drives.

This week Cassel faces a tough New England secondary. The Patriots only allowed 178 passing yards to Ryan Tannehill in Week 1. The Vikings may also stray away from their passing game this week. The Patriots allowed 193 rushing yards to RBs in Week 1, so the Vikings might want to take advantage of that and use All Pro Adrian Peterson.

Cassel should be avoided this week. He won't pass the ball enough and he's going up against a stingy pass defense.

MIN QB Matt Cassel - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Matt Cassel - Week 1 vs. St. Louis
Matt Cassel was impressive enough to win the starting job over first-round rookie Teddy Bridgewater. That doesn't mean you should start him on your fantasy team, though. Cassel has a low ceiling and his primary job will be handing the ball off to Adrian Peterson. He faces a tough Rams secondary this week and should only viewed as a low QB2.

MIN QB Matt Cassel - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The Minnesota Vikings announced Matt Cassel as the starting quarterback after the third week of the preseason. He takes over Norv Turner's offense with some weapons at his disposal. Kyle Rudolph and Cordarrelle Patterson give him both a big and a speedy target, respectively.

Cassel has looked good in the preseason completing 66 percent of his passes and tossing a touchdown in two of the first three games.

Fantasy Downside

Cassel started for Minnesota last season and didn't produce very promising results. His touchdown to interception ratio was 11:9 in nine games (six starts).

And while Cassel gets the start now, it's possible that rookie Teddy Bridgewater could step in at some point this season. The team's first-round draft pick was impressive in the preseason and the team invested a lot in him.

Bottom Line

Cassel is a very low QB2 this season. He's not worth a selection in most leagues.
