NYJ RB Chris Johnson - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Johnson vs Bears
After a solid Week 1, Chris Johnson's numbers came down in Week 2. He did have about the same amount of carries, but wasn't nearly involved with the passing game as much last week. Chris Ivory is also splitting touches with Johnson.

If you expected him to be an RB1, then you are going to be disappointed with Johnson unless something happens to Ivory. The Bears run defense is average so if we felt Johnson would get more touches, he might be a decent play. But that's not looking to be the case.

Johnson rates a RB3/Flex for Week 3. Not a great start for fantasy owners.

NYJ RB Chris Johnson - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Johnson vs Packers
Chris Johnson got decent numbers in his Jets debut. He had 13 carries for 68 yards and added five receptions. What is worrisome is that his backup Chris Ivory eclipsed the 100 yard mark and scored a touchdown, although on fewer carries.

If this becomes a full-blown running back by committee, Johnson's value takes a hit, but we expect Johnson to lead in touches and be much more active in the passing game. The Packers run defense isn't great, so there should be some production from Johnson. He's an RB2 this week.

NYJ RB Chris Johnson - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Johnson vs Raiders
After leaving Tennessee, Chris Johnson is definitely playing with a chip on shoulder. His numbers the last three years were decent, but there was something different about him as far as the way he carried the football and ran with it.

The Jets feel he will be very good in their run-first offense so Johnson owners should have high expectations. He has a great matchup for Week 1 against the Raiders whose defense might be one of the worst in the NFL.

Start Johnson and keep an eye on how many snaps he plays. He is a low-end RB2 for Week 1, but could give you even better numbers if the Jets use him exclusively which isn't out of the questions.

NYJ RB Chris Johnson - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Jets brought in Chris Johnson with the hope he can return to his former self. The last three seasons have been okay, but not as good as the standard Johnson had set with Tennessee earlier in his career. New York will use Johnson as their No. 1 back and he should get a heavy workload. He was a high end RB2 last season with 1,077 yards which ranked him 11th in the league. Johnson also got into the end zone last season 9 times which tied for 8th. No doubt Johnson still has gas in the tank and the Jets want to give him the opportunity to show it.

Fantasy Downside
Many critics have been down on Johnson for the perceived notion he doesn't run hard anymore. Even if that is true, there are other concerns. Anytime a running back with a pedigree goes to a new team, questions marks like carries and touches always come up. The Jets have Chris Ivory, who has been a starter in the league. He could end up taking away some of Johnson's touches.

Bottom Line
Johnson is very intriguing because of his past, but the last three seasons have us concerned with both his desire and productivity. Although Johnson will be the starter and Jets want to run, run, run, Ivory and Bilal Powell could be a big part of New York's plan. Johnson's ADP is 61 and you can take him higher in a standard league. He has a good chance to be a RB2 again and even with other backs who are decent around him, he will help your team.
