NCAAB Conference Tournament Betting Preview: SEC

My favorite conference tournament every year is the SEC Tournament. It always features an exciting brand of basketball, with some of the best players, coaches, and teams in the country.

The 14-team tournament starts today with No. 11 seed Vanderbilt battling No. 14 seed Georgia and No. 12 Missouri facing No. 13 Mississippi. Given the size of the SEC field and the late start date, the games are played on five consecutive days, with the championship decided on Sunday.

The No. 1 overall seed is Auburn, who finished 15-3 in the conference, just one game ahead of Kentucky and Tennessee. The Wildcats and Volunteers also earned the valuable bye to the quarterfinals, along with No. 4 seed Arkansas. All four teams begin action on Friday, March 11th.

SEC Tournament History

The SEC Tournament has been played in its current format every year since 1979 when it was determined the tournament champion would earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

There have been four times when the champion has successfully played on all four days: 2000, 2008, 2009, and 2019. Kentucky has been the dominant team in the tournament, earning 31 titles going back to the inaugural tournament in 1933. Alabama, the defending champion, ranks second with seven titles. Florida and Tennessee are tied for third with four SEC Tournament Championships.
