CLE TE Cameron Jordan - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Jordan Cameron at Pittsburgh Steelers

In two games against Pittsburgh last year, Jordan Cameron did not deliver big production. He caught eight passes for 101 yards and no touchdowns. However, those contests took place when star wide receiver Josh Gordon was still around. Now Gordon is gone for the season due to a suspension and apparently working for a car dealer. I can already envision a crazy commercial on the Cleveland airwaves with the slogan “By Gosh, Just Buy a Car From Josh.”

Anyways, all humor aside, Gordon’s absence makes Cameron the top target for Cleveland’s quarterbacks. And speaking of quarterbacks, Brian Hoyer’s presence as Cleveland’s starter may not last, but as long as it does, it is great news for Cameron, who caught three touchdown passes last year during the brief period Hoyer was under center. Owner should set aside Cameron’s recent problems with the Steelers and regard him as a safe TE1.

CLE TE Jordan Cameron - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

After two nondescript seasons, Jordan Cameron came of age in 2013. A product of Southern Cal, Cameron caught 80 passes for 917 yards and seven touchdowns despite playing with three different quarterbacks. That is important to note, given the possibility both Brian Hoyer and Johnny “Football” Manziel will start games this year for the Browns. Will Cameron continue to enjoy success no matter who is throwing him the ball?

2014 Upside
Although Cameron had a great year, it was Josh Gordon who was Cleveland’s top receiver. With Gordon awaiting a suspension that may cost him half or all of the season, Cameron will be the top target on the Browns by default, especially since Cleveland foolishly decided not to select Sammy Watkins and decided to bank on wide receivers with obvious limitations. He projects as a target machine. Additionally, Cameron is in the last season of his contract. Even though the Browns seem inclined to keep him around for awhile, Jordan knows another big year will equal big bucks. Unlike many tight ends who spend extra time blocking to make up for a below-average offensive line, Cameron can concentrate on being a receiver thanks to the presence of players such as Joe Thomas.

2014 Downside
Cameron’s breakthrough came with Norv Turner, who is now with the Minnesota Vikings, as offensive coordinator. Turner’s system has always favored tight ends, even going as far back as the great Dallas Cowboys teams of the early nineties with Jay Novacek. It is one of the reasons why many are touting Kyle Rudolph as a player on the rise heading into the season. Will Cameron fare as well without Turner? Also, while the absence of Gordon is a plus in that it will mean more targets for Cameron, it is also a minus because Cameron will draw the most attention from opposing defenses. Cleveland’s offense was pass-oriented last year as the Browns lacked talent in the backfield. With Ben Tate and rookie Terrance West, that is no longer the case. They will be more balanced.

Bottom Line
Just as Maxwell the Geico Pig was able to relax and sing “Boots and Pants” on vacation thanks to his Geico app, you will be able to relax if Cameron is on your fantasy team. He will be one of the best players at his position. Most importantly, he is a value pick as his ADP should be in the fifth-round range. He probably won’t be as productive as the likes of Jimmy Graham and Julius Thomas, but at a lower price, the value may be better as you can build up high-end talent at other spots and still have a very good starter.
