MIA TE Charles Clay - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Clay - Week 3 vs. Kansas City

Charles Clay had a downer Week 1 performance when he caught just two passes for 27 yards. In Week 2 he caught a lot more passes (7), but he only finished with 31 yards. His 4.4 yards per catch is simply not enough.

He's been held without a touchdown so far this season, but that could change this week. The Chiefs have allowed a league-high three touchdowns to tight ends this season. Having said that, the Chiefs gave up the third-fewest fantasy points to TEs last season. So proceed with caution.

Clay should be viewed as a low TE2 option this week against K.C.

Charles Clay - Week 2 vs. Buffalo

Charles Clay was targeted six times in Week 1 (only Mike Wallace was targeted more), but only finished with two receptions for 27 yards. The Dolphins' primary focus against New England was running the football. Wallace was the only Dolphins receiver who had success.

Clay has a lot of talent and his six targets are encouraging. He's facing a Buffalo defense that has allowed an opposing tight end to score a TD in five of the past seven games.

Clay should be viewed as a low-end TE1 option on Sunday.

Charles Clay - Week 1 vs. New England

Charles Clay was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice with a knee injury. According to ESPN's James Walker, Clay is expected to play in Week 1 barring any setbacks.

Last season the Patriots recognized Clay's talent and had their best cover man, Aqib Talib, line up against him on most plays. In that matchup Clay caught just one pass for six yards on two targets.

Clay, who led Miami in touchdown receptions last season, is still a talented enough player to be considered as a low TE1 option this week.

MIA TE Charles Clay - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Charles Clay was forced into the starter role last season after a season ending injury to free agent acquisition Dustin Keller. Before becoming a starter Clay only had 34 career receptions in his first two seasons with Miami. Then, the halfback turned tight end had a great season. Clay finished with a 69-759-6 stat line, and also added one rushing touchdown to his total.

Fantasy Downside
While Clay had a successful season, he wasn't exactly an elite option. He had nine games under 45 receiving yards in 2013.

Bottom Line
Clay should be viewed as a borderline TE1. After all he did finish in the top 10 amongst tight ends in targets (101), catches (69), yards (759) and touchdowns (6) last season. He's a viable TE option if you wait past the middle rounds on the position.
