The Carolina Panthers have made their quarterback decision.

According to multiple league sources, the Panthers have decided to keep sixth-round pick Tony Pike as their third quarterback and waive Hunter Cantwell.

Neither passer lit it up in the preseason, with Pike finishing with a team-high 58.4 passer rating to Cantwell’s 57.2.

Starter Matt Moore finished with a 56.1 rating and rookie backup Jimmy Clausen had a 46.8 rating.

Cantwell opened training camp as Moore’s backup based on his experience, and had the strongest arm on the team by far. But the Panthers went with Pike based in part on the intangibles they saw as similar to former quarterback Jake Delhomme.

Matt Moore was easily the top quarterback at Panthers camp, and Tony Pike clearly was the fourth.

That became even more evident Tuesday, as Pike was almost completely out of the loop during team drills. Pike took next to no snaps during full-team action, yielding his reps to Jimmy Clausen and Hunter Cantwell, who have alternated with the second and third teams throughout camp. He still threw in individual drills, but his inactivity was obvious to anyone who saw practice.

The move underscores how far behind the other three quarterbacks Pike actually is, for a number of reasons.

Running a spread offense and playing out of the shotgun was one thing. The two-plus weeks of June workouts he missed because Cincinnati is on the quarter system is another.

It's not as if the Panthers think he has no future, he just might need time to catch up. But at the moment, time in practice is something he's not getting enough of, as they've chosen to invest in the other two backups.

Contrary to perceptions around the league, there is no open quarterback competition in Carolina. Barring injury or "a mental breakdown of Jake Delhomme proportions", Matt Moore will open the season as the starter. The more relevant question is who will be Moore's primary backup and defacto starter if Moore gets injured. Hunter Cantwell, an undrafted free agent who was on the scout team last year, has impressed coaches and appears to be No. 2 on the depth chart at present. Reed believes, however, that Jimmy Clausen will emerge to take that spot by opening day.
