Week 4: Romo vs Saints
Tony Romo's numbers have been all over the board in 2014. He finally threw a multi-touchdown game and had a very high completion percentage, but he only threw 23 passes in the Cowboys win.
Romo will face the Saints at home on Sunday. New Orleans has not fared well against quarterbacks early this season, but which Tony Romo will we see?
He only rates a low-end No. 1 for Week 4 despite the good matchup. If you have another option consider it.
Week 3: Romo vs Rams
Tony Romo's numbers weren't great Week 2, but they were a heck of lot better than Week 1. He was more of a game manager which is great for Cowboys fans, but not for fantasy owners.
For Week 3, Romo will face a pretty good Rams pass defense. He did practice on Thursday so his back shouldn't affect him on Sunday.
I think we are going to see more of the DeMarco Murray show this week which means Romo could put up similar numbers like last week. He is not a starter against the Rams so keep him on the bench.
Week 2: Romo vs Titans
It was an awful start for Tony Romo to kick off the 2014 season. He threw 3 interceptions and had trouble getting the ball down field. He looked bad doing it too as he had trouble with the 49ers pressure.
Romo is also still fighting back issues although he did practice this week.
Although Romo still had top 10 fantasy QB numbers last week, there should be some concern about him as your main QB. In fact, against the Titans, he ranks as a QB2 and probably should not be in your starting lineup. Tennessee has a pretty good pass defense and Romo will have to prove to us the back is not affecting his play.
Week 1: Romo vs 49ers
Obviously, the back surgery for Tony Romo this past offseason is still on some people's minds and has been talked about this week as some observers think he doesn't look right. However, he did practice this week and he is set to go Week 1.
He doesn't have a great matchup to open the season as the Cowboys host San Francisco. The Niners defense is still very good despite some of the off-the-field incidents. They were ninth against the pass last season.
For Week 1, Romo rates a low-end No. 1 at best. If you have a better option, don't be afraid to use it, because there are going to be some quarterbacks ranked this week ahead of Romo that normally you wouldn't consider.
Fantasy Upside
Tony Romo is a lightning rod for criticism - some warranted, some not. But he is a good NFL quarterback and the numbers have proven that. He has thrown for an average of about 4,300 yards over the last three seasons with 90 touchdowns over that span. The Cowboys have great weapons in the passing game and now have brought in a new offensive coordinator in Scott Linehan. Linehan has a track record of putting the ball in the air and did good things with Matt Stafford last season. Expect more attempts by Romo.
Fantasy Downside
Durability is an issue for Romo. He is coming off back surgery and is 34 years old. And despite Linehan coming in and the perception they will throw more, the Cowboys actually threw (64.3%) more last season than the Lions did last season (62.2%) under Lenehan.
Bottom Line
Injury is really the only negative factor with Romo. His past numbers along with the offensive weapons in Dallas say another 4,000 yard season with 30+ touchdown passes. In fact, Romo, for some reason, is still underrated in fantasy circles. Maybe it's the anti-Cowboy bias, but his numbers are consistently up there with some of the league's best. If you are going to wait to the mid-rounds to take a quarterback, then grab Romo. His ADP is 106, but taking him a round or two earlier really gives you good value. Again, the health factor is a risk, but the reward is high if he stays healthy.
