Ryan Mallett led the Baltimore Ravens to an upset victory over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers eight months ago. He has a 99.5 quarterback rating and a 74 percent completion rate through two preseason games.

Despite that success, Mallett could lose the backup quarterback job to surprisingly electric journeyman Josh Johnson, according to coach John Harbaugh.

In Baltimore's 19-18 preseason win at the Indianapolis Colts, Johnson led the team in passing and rushing, showing great touch on his throws and the ability to scramble for yards. His best moment came when he directed a near flawless two-minute drill before halftime, driving the Ravens 79 yards with poise and hitting Jeremy Butler for a 12-yard touchdown.

"[Johnson] is making a case to make this team," Harbaugh said after the game. "There is a competition for that spot. It's been on-going through training camp."

Fantasy Impact:

The story said it's been long assumed that Mallett is the primary backup to Joe Flacco. He took all the first-team reps in the spring when Flacco was sidelined while recovering from knee surgery, and he started both preseason games.

Ever since the Ravens signed Benjamin Watson in the off-season and re-signed Dennis Pitta, the tight end position figured to be among the deepest on the team and the most utilized by the offense.

Training camp injuries to Crockett Gillmore, Maxx Williams, Daniel Brown and Pitta have left the Ravens with three healthy tight ends at times, including two, Darren Waller and Nick Boyle, who will miss the first four and 10 games, respectively, for violating the NFL drug policy.

It hasn't stopped offensive coordinator Marc Trestman from calling plays for his tight ends.

In Thursday's 22-19 preseason opening victory over the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium, tight ends were targeted for 16 of the 28 passes attempted by quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Josh Johnson.

Fantasy Impact:

The tight ends responded with 11 catches for 105 yards, including five for 48 yards by Waller, a converted wide receiver, the story said. Watson has been one of quarterback Joe Flacco's favorite targets throughout training camp. Watson will likely open the season as one of the starting tight ends, along with Gillmore, who returned to practice Monday after missing most of training camp with a hamstring injury. Pitta remains sidelined with a sprained finger, the story all said.

Colts still expect Andrew Luck to start vs Texans. Re-signed Josh Johnson because backup Matt Hasselbeck has been sick.

Fantasy Impact:

Speculation began when the Colts re-signed Johnson, but it appears that he's serving as depth while Hasselbeck recovers from an illness. Luck should play on Thursday.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano said that quarterback Andrew Luck is “trending in the right direction” as he tries to return to the lineup on Thursday night against the Texans, something supported by the team’s decision to release Josh Johnson Monday after the veteran served as Matt Hasselbeck’s backup in the Week 4 win over Jacksonville.

Luck missed that game with a right shoulder injury that Chris Hagan of FOX59 in Indianapolis reports is a partial separation, or subluxation, of his shoulder. Luck reportedly had an MRI done to assess the injury last week and that several doctors from around the country have been consulted about the best course for recovery.

Luck tested his arm on Saturday, but wasn’t ready to play against the Jaguars. He’ll do the same in practice for the next couple of days to determine if the upward trend he’s on takes him into the starting lineup on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact:

If he isn’t ready to go, the Colts will have to make another roster move that could bring Johnson back to Indy for a second week on the sideline to backup Matt Hasselbeck. It's possible the Colts thought a home game against the Jags would be a good time to rest Luck and have him ready to go for a Thursday night game at Houston.

The next game Tony Romo can start is Nov. 22 against the Miami Dolphins.

The Dallas Cowboys will place their starting quarterback on the injured reserve/designated to return list on Tuesday, according to a source, which will keep him out for the next eight weeks as he recovers from a broken left collarbone. Romo will not have surgery to repair the collarbone.

Romo will miss seven games because of the Cowboys' Oct. 18 bye week.

Brandon Weeden will be the starter in Romo's absence and the team is working out Christian Ponder, Josh Johnson, Matt Flynn and McLeod Bethel-Thompson but could also look to call up Kellen Moore from the practice squad.

Fantasy Impact:

The move to short-term injured reserve opens up a roster spot for the Cowboys. Last year the Cowboys placed defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence on the list at the start of the season because of a foot injury and he missed the first eight games of his rookie season. Had the Cowboys placed wide receiver Dez Bryant, who is recovering from foot surgery, on the list, then they would have had to have kept Romo on the 53-man roster. A team can use the designation on only one player.

Todd Bowles provided clarity Monday on the ever-changing quarterback depth chart. Sort of.

Commenting for the first time since the New York Jets made their final cuts, releasing veteran quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson, Bowles revealed the reason they signed the two veterans was because starter Ryan Fitzpatrick "wasn't totally healthy."

Wait, what?

"Just being nicked up, just normal injuries," Bowles said. "You didn't want anything to happen to him, so you have to have a contingency plan and you bring in some other guys."

Fantasy Impact:

Fitzpatrick's health bears watching because he broke his left leg last December while playing for the Houston Texans and had a steel rod surgically implanted into his lower leg. So if he's banged up after a couple of quarters of preseason work, spread out over two games, it's something to keep an eye on.

The New York Jets are down to two healthy quarterbacks.

Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson were among the Jets' cuts Saturday as they pared their roster to the mandatory 53-player limit.

Flynn and Johnson were signed this summer to compete for a backup role behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, who became the starter after Geno Smith had his jaw broken on Aug. 11 by a punch from then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali. Smith was expected to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.

The Jets' only other healthy quarterback is rookie Bryce Petty, a fourth-round pick out of Baylor.

One day after their 25-11 loss at Tampa Bay, the Cincinnati Bengals cut a trio of reserves as they start whittling their way down to the regular season's 53-man roster limit.

Third-team quarterback Josh Johnson was the player with the most name recognition, released outright to free agency.

After receiving 57 snaps in the preseason-opening win over the New York Giants, Johnson didn't get on the field Monday. Part of that was the product of the Bengals struggling to get into an offensive rhythm with starting quarterback Andy Dalton at the helm. In order to get him to end his night on a positive a note, the Bengals left their first-team offense in the game until it finally moved the ball for a field goal just before halftime.

AJ McCarron, the No. 2 quarterback who spent nearly all of last season on injury lists with a shoulder ailment, played the entire second half. Johnson's release appears a clear sign the Bengals are planning to go with Dalton and McCarron as their two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

For the fourth time since free agency opened last month, the Bengals have re-signed a player who had left and gone away. On Thursday it was Josh Johnson, quarterback Andy Dalton’s backup from 2013, after he signed a one-year deal that figures to be for near the minimum.

The Bengals were thought to be interested in re-signing 2014 backup Jason Campbell, but there was talk he has been considering retirement and the Bengals moved back to Johnson, a seven-year veteran turning 29 next month.

Fantasy Impact:

All signs have been pointing to A.J. McCarron still getting dibs on the backup spot that has been manned by three different players under Dalton.
