Cardinals RB Beanie Wells playing time is being managed. That's why we're not seeing him in consecutive possessions much. Wells continues to be hampered by a knee problem, the nature of which has not been disclosed. The Cardinals change a lot formationally when Wells isn't in the game. With LaRod Stephens-Howling or Chester Taylor, they use more one-back sets.

If Cardinals RB Beanie Wells can't play on Sunday in Baltimore, Alfonso Smith is likely to start, but LaRod Stephens-Howling and Chester Taylor likely would play there, too.
"It will be a little bit of back-by-committee," head coach Ken Whisenhunt said when asked who would play if Wells was out.
It's not a great matchup against the Ravens and it seems to be a situation to just stay away from, at least for this week.

Running back Beanie Wells was still limited with his hamstring injury, but he expects to play Sunday against the Giants. Whisenhunt said if Wells doesn’t have any setbacks this week, “hopefully he’ll be OK for the game.”
“It’s one of those things where you are worried that when he opens it up it may pull and you can feel that little twinge,” Whisenhunt said. “Sometimes you can push through that, sometimes you have to be careful with that. It’s a balancing act.
“He’s in a good place right now. We could certainly use him.”
Fellow running back LaRod Stephens-Howling, who hurt his hand in the opener, was limited himself and Whisenhunt is hoping Stephens-Howling will also be available.
It doesn't sound like a sure thing that Wells will be a go, so his owners should be on their toes this week. The Cardinals don't play until 4:05 PM ET.

Cardinals running back Beanie Wells was close to playing, coach Ken Whisenhunt said, but the Cardinals didn't want to risk a setback. If Wells had aggravated the injury and missed the next three games, it would have been a lousy decision, Whisenhunt said. The coach is hopeful that Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling (hand) will play this week against the Giants.
That said, those of us outside the organization rarely know the full truth about injuries. If Wells participates in all of practice Wednesday through Friday, then I'll be fairly sure he's playing. But I'm guessing he'll at least be limited. Wells said today that he will definitely play against the Giants. But we heard that last week, too, before the Seahawks game.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said he thinks RBs Beanie Wells and LaRod Stephens-Howling should be back this week but it will depend on practice.

Cardinals RB LaRod Stephens-Howling (biceps, hand contusion) will be evaluated today.
He only got a handful of touches and targets and doesn't seem like a fantasy option, esp. with Beanie Wells playing well, and even after Ryan Williams went down for the year.

With Cardinals running back Ryan Williams likely out for the season, Arizona's decision to trade Tim Hightower to the Redskins again will be questioned. At least the timing of it.
Williams likely suffered a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee Friday. Tests will confirm, but it appears he's headed for surgery and a long rehabilitation period.
There already has been a lot of second-guessing, via twitter, about trading Hightower. And the timing of the deal was interesting.
With Hightower gone, the Cardinals have only four running backs in camp. Now it's three. And that counts LaRod Stephens-Howling, who at 5-7 and 185 pounds is not going to replace Beanie Wells should something happen to him.
Coaches are pleased with the development of Alfonso Smith, who was on the practice squad last year, but the team likely will add a back in the coming days. The options aren't attractive. With rosters at 90, most backs are already in camp. You can find flaws in all the ones available, from Tiki Barber to LenDale White to Laurence Maroney.
Cardinals fear Ryan Williams will be out for season
Saturday, August 20, 2011, 1:56am
The Arizona Cardinals think rookie running back Ryan Williams tore a patella tendon in his right knee.
That was the preliminary word from coach Ken Whisenhunt following the Cardinals' 28-20 preseason defeat at Green Bay on Friday night. Williams would miss the 2011 season if that were the case. He would then face a grueling rehabilitation.
This injury could lead to more playing time for LaRod Stephens-Howling. The Cardinals have used Stephens-Howling increasingly over the past couple seasons, sometimes with three wide receivers and another running back.
Beanie Wells is going to have his chance to own the Cardinals running game without having to look over his shoulder for the talented rookie. Stephens-Howling gets a boost as he enters primary backup territory and could eventually find himself starting given Wells' injury history.
Beanie Wells: I am ready to tear it up
Friday, June 17, 2011, 9:12am
Running back Beanie Wells was on “The Chuck and Vince Live” show this morning on The Fan AM 1060, and while he’s obviously going to portray confidence, he also made it clear he understands his opportunities to show something — at least in Arizona — are probably dwindling.
“This is definitely going to be my year without a doubt,” Wells said. “This is my third year and three strikes and you’re out, and I’m definitely not striking out. I am ready to tear it up. It’s my time and I am ready to go out and prove that.”
Wells will have plenty of competition, with newly drafted Ryan Williams and teammates Tim Hightower & LaRod Stephens-Howling. We'd stay away from the Cardinals running backs on draft day.
